I literally said those exact words to my husband "I can't believe I am paying for this" lol. With all the advances in medicine and dentistry you'd think they would have figured out a way to make brackets smoother (perhaps the metal ones are). I was so shocked by how jagged they feel. I had prepared myself for sore teeth and a few sore spots from poky wires; I was definitely not prepared for shredded/raw lips and cheeks  But just think, a year from now we will likely be like those people who barely remember what the first few days actually felt like. We'll remember that they were painful but won't remember how the pain felt. We'll be on this board telling people about how we don't even notice our braces anymore (can you imagine lol). And on top of that we will have beautiful looking (though likely still braced) teeth

did you ever think about switching to metal on top because of the bulkiness of the ceramics? I think I might ask on Monday when I go get the bottom arch

I was already past the hardest part by the time I even considered that there might be such a huge difference between the two different types of brackets. My hubby has metal on the bottom and I never noticed a drastic difference in the size of his bottoms and mine (my ceramic ones on the bottom are smaller than the ones on the top). I don't know if I would have wanted to change to metal even if I had known though; I like how inconspicuous the ceramic brackets are right now. As I get more comfortable with them I fully intend to try different colors and have as much fun with them as I can but for now I enjoy the fact that many people I interact with don't notice them.
