Hi Sydsmom,

I can still remember those days a little over a year ago (1/10/05).
Like everyone said, it WILL get better. I took pain relievers every 4 hours religiously probably for about 6 months.
Also, salt water IS good for a rinse, but you might also try Biotene Mouthwash. It has worked good for me. And also take L-Lysine supplements, it helps heal the canker sores faster. And like everyone is saying -- use your WAX. It is a life saver !

Good luck !!!

I'm eight days in -- and it does get better like everybody says. I stopped by the ortho to get some paperwork for insurance yesterday and asked about the staining on the ligs on my top front teeth -- after a week they were already orange from all the Chef Boyardee and tomato soup I've been eating. The assistant told me to come on back and my Dr. recommended wire ties. Here was the conversation:

Dr: Hey! How's it going? We had a bet around the office that if you made it past Monday you just might make it through this.
Me: Monday was a holiday. You weren't open.
Dr: <laughing> So you don't hate me?
Me: Oh, no. I still hate you. I just don't hate you as much.
Dr: Think you'll make it?
Me: Well, I don't want to take a small caliber pistol and shoot my brains out anymore.
Dr: Yeah. You'll make it.

Seriously, though, my upper cheeks are still pretty raw. I've been trying NOT to use the wax too much so they will toughen up. Noticed today that I'm having a little more trouble than usual talking -- my teeth seem all loose like I'm sucking air in between them or something.

But, I've lost 7 lbs.!

BIG, BIG thanks to everyone for all your responses!!!! :-)

This board is AWESOME!!!

Okay, I think what I've been doing wrong is that I'm trying to be a big old stubborn hag about the wax and the painkillers ;-)

But -- even with avoiding all those "comforts" -- I'm doing MUCH better today. I came home from work yesterday, cried, took a bubble bath, briefly considered calling my ortho to get these things removed, but decided to stick it out.

The pain is noticeably less today, and I may even get over my stubbornness enough to put some wax on those darn pokey things on my molars when I get home ;-)
