Inman aligners

Hi everyone,
Haven't posted on here for a while now so I thought I would just drop by and read the posts and let you know how I am getting on.
I have had my brace since Nov 08 now and my teeth have been pretty straight since January. I am still wearing my brace around 20 hrs a day but as soon as I take it out they start to migrate to their old position. My dentist tells me this is normal but it looks like I will be wearing the brace for a long time! I really don't want the fixed brace so I am happy continue for the time being.
I am back at the dentist on 20th May. So I will update some time after then.
Has anyone else noticed that the plastic bit that sits behind the teeth wears down after a while. The metal has started to come through the plastic on mine!

Re: Expander
[quote="luckylou"]Hi guys
I wondered what your thoughts were on the expander brace? I have this in alone, for the next ten weeks apparently, then move onto the Inman aligner for eight or so weeks. It is really bulky in the palate area and sits right behind my front teeth. Speech is pretty bad. Has anyone had this also, and is the IA much better for speech after the expander? Cheers.
Hey Luckylou, havnt been on this for ages. I had expander in for 9 weeks and just got inman last week. Hav to say, was pleasantly surprised, although bulkyish I think it will be a little easier to get used to than the expander. Im guessing your expander was similar to mine and covers most of your palate, nightmare lol. The inman doesnt cover as much but still takes a bit of getting used to. It was ironic, because by time expander was finished I was used to it. I couldnt wear expander or inman to work(6/7 hrs a day) as I teach but seems to be ok and wear it everywhere else. Your fears were exact same as mine were, but inman is no worse than the expander and in my opinion may indeed be slightly easier to speak with. Hope this helps, all the best.

IA Experience
Hey all, almost a week into treatment now and cant complain. Bit sore first few days but generally comfortable enough. Was just wondering a couple of things I meant to ask dentist and didnt. Following tightness and tenderness for first few days, the inman feels alot looser,is this normal? And secondly, I had a few teeth filed before fitting, is this a one off, or does filing happen at each visit? havnt had a check up yet. All in all its quite good. Cheers all, keep smiling!!!!!!!

Re: IA Experience
Hi MUFC, yeah I found the inman does get looser, but not so much that the bar to the front actually moves around. And yep, the filing is done at every visit. I've had the inman about 6 weeks and have had filing done three times. My dentist reckons only once more should do it. The first two times were ok, the third time.....my God! I think that was because I had a different guy doing it who obviously didn't take the softly softly approach I appreciate!!MUFC wrote:Hey all, almost a week into treatment now and cant complain. Were you told that you would need to wear it for almost 6 months??!!! When you take it out for any length, do you wear the retainer at night to pevent migration??
I haven't noticed any wear and tear on the front bar, but I have only had it 6 weeks. I know that I grind mine at night, so I would imagine that if I had it for 6 months, it would be a mangled mess!!

Hello!
No I was not told how long I would have to wear the brace for and to be honest at the time I was just happy that they were able to do something with my teeth.
I wear the retainer almost all day and night and take it out to eat and for social occasions with friends. I think I can have it out for around an hour with no noticeable migration.
How are your teeth moving?

I've had my inman since 16 december and you are the first person that I have heard of who has had it longer than me! I had hoped that I would have it off by now but there is a huge difference to my teeth. The final bit is slow going and my dentist said is the hardest part as you are getting the teeth to move in such a specific way rather than the beginning where they are just being pushed out or in depending on your teeth. Having 2 weekly visits now so hopefully I will have it off soon enough but like you if I end up wearing it for another two months (which would be six in total) I won't be too bothered once my teeth are how I want them at the end. It is still a very short period of time.
Great to hear how everyone else is getting on. At this stage my teeth hardly hurt at all but I presume the most pressure is on your teeth in the beginning when the most movement is required.
Hey all!
Hey all! Hope alls going well. Im expecting a full 6 months as well guys, dentist had said 4 but since i cant wear aligner to work for 7hrs a day im expecting an extra month or two. Got first apppointment back tomorrow after 2 weeks with aligner. Its crazy, i can see a bit of movement already but by time i leave work they ve gone back. im kicking myself for taking it out, tried it in but explaining things with it in is hilarious!lol. i was tryining to figure out just how this thing gets tightened? is is painful?
eating
Hi all
Just wondering if anyone ever eats with their IA in. Am afraid to even eat soup or smoothie, in case any bits get stuck in it and causes an obstruction or infection.
Am I being too paranoid? Is it easy to eat with it in? I don't think it would be possible with mine as my teeth don't meet so might not be able to chew.
Thanks

Re: Hey all!
Hi MUFC. I got mine tightened last week. The dentist made the back metal bits on the outside shorter by using the laser type yoke that she used to put in the composites. It felt a bit tighter which was good, cos I was concerned that my teeth weren't moving. It didn't really hurt.MUFC wrote:Hey all! Hope alls going well. My teeth seem to be moving quite well actually. I don't think my case was too bad, overlap and tooth rotation was about it. My overlap is almost fixed. I have to stop looking at it every chance I get, because then I don't notice any difference!!
I thought the average treatment time was 2 - 4 months....I hadn't reckoned on 6 months. That said, the dentist thinks another month should see me right. Like yourself, I have been wearing it on average 22 hours a day. My only concern is that when we stop wearing it fulltime, will the night-time retainer maintain their position? I wonder if we should wear the inman for short periods of time after the treatment time, say two days a month? I might ask my dentist when I see him next week.

I don't eat with it in....I tried chewing gum once, take it from me, not a bright idea, especially when you have wax in! Also you are right, your back molars don't meet so it would be very difficult. My dentist told me to take it out before eating. Not sure about smoothies though.
I drink tea, coffee wine etc but that's about it. I take it out to eat. I find it really easy to put it in and out so it's not a bother really.

Hi ,would just like to say thank you so much to everyone for posting on here ,I've found out the answers to all those questions that you forget to ask your dentist haha .
I got mine in today ,doing the top first and then the bottom .The filing was a bit uncomfortable but no worse than visiting the hygienist .The aligner is quite invisible but trying to talk is really bad at the moment ,the children found their bed time story very amusing ha ha .
So far not painful but dentist said the next few days will be uncomfortable and then once the teeth start moving then things will calm down .So far so good
