I only had one in my whole life, it was on a molar, and it was inside it, not anywhere near the gum line. So yeah, flossing is good and all, but your teeth won't rot out of your head just from that.

As for retainers, I was freaked out about having to do something every day for the rest of my life, until I realized that there are LOTS of things I will have to do every day for the rest of my ilfe! I have to take a shower every day, and put on clothes. I have to put on glasses or contacts, and I have to brush my teeth and brush my hair. There are pills I will have to take for the rest of my life, too. Like with showering or brushing my teeth or taking my medicine, it's just something you eventually add into your routine and then don't think about. I STRONGLY recommend re-conceptualizing the idea of 'for the rest of your life' as some prison sentence. You pop it in and go to sleep--that's it. Do it after you brush your teeth before bed. Take it out in the morning. It's really not that scary.
exactly... youre asleep when its on so what is the big deal? my ortho toldme that i coudl eventually go to wearing it every other night or once a week, but for me, if i were to wear it every other night, why not just wear it nightly?

just wear them.
I wonder why my ortho uses hawley if the essix are better. I know the essix are dirt cheap to make so they would be more cost efficient for the ortho as well..

Whos says essix is better than Hawley?

Different retainers work better in certain situations. It is all case dependent.

I agree with everyone, wearing retainers during the night is no big deal, after a month or so, you wont even notice it during the night.

Anyone see the movie Date Night? Tina Fey's character wears her retainers before going to bed :D

When I got my braces off I was given a fixed retainer and an essix retainer. I was told that the fixed one would only hold my front 4 teeth. Even with the fixed one in all the time a little gap would have appeared by night time and would close by the next morning when I wore my essix. After 3 months my fixed retainer fell out and my ortho decided not to put it back in. The gap in my teeth stopped appearing! I still wear my essix every night and plan to for life. I paid good money to fix my teeth so why let that go to waste?
