I just wanted to say it looks like you are making fantastic progress and I will be following your story! I also have quite a severe open bite, going for my first consultation next week and I too do not want to go down the route of surgery, mainly down to being scared to be perfectly honest.
You're on your way to a new smile!
Hi, thanks for your kind words. How bad is your open bite?
Its still very early days for me I have another 20 plus months of treatment a head but am being open minded. I really hope that I will get closure with this method of treatment. I have firmly decided against surgery so any improvement will be good for me. So far I have been very pleased with the results and even the orthodontist did not expect this much improvement so soon. So it sound like I am heading in the right direction.
Make sure you get 2-3 different consultations as some orthodontists will only offer surgery. I had to visit several before I had this treatment method offered to me. Good luck and stay in touch.

Hi Andy, I haven't ever had my open bite properly looked at as of yet but I have my first consultation next week. To put into perspective my front three teeth on the left side don't touch the bottom and my front 4 on the right side don't touch the bottom (hope that makes sense!) with this section of teeth they also overjet though again I don't know how much by.If I place the tip of my baby finger vertically between the teeth it fits through with my teeth clenched, it doesn't fit if I try to do it with the finger horizontal though (again I hope that makes sense! haha) I've always felt my problem is pretty complex and along with a big fear of the dentist which I have only recently overcome it has always put me off getting it sorted.
Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to get a few consultations because I am 99.9% certain I don't want surgery, I don't think I'd be able to go ahead with it but would be happy just with an improvement to my bite!

Not to hijack or anything, but I'm going down the same road you are and I got my braces on pretty close to when you did as well. (Mine went on in April and I started elastics in July.)
I was also told surgery would be my best option, but opted against it. I decided instead to have my wisdom teeth pulled(had to happen anyway) and give braces/elastics a try. I have plenty of other issues to still fix, but my bite seems to be making some good progress closing up. So it's definitely possible, my ortho seemed pleased with it so far.

I'm not sure, I didn't know people measured it until I started lurking here.
At first I was only making contact on my wisdom teeth. Once I had my wisdom teeth removed it closed up a small amount. The first picture is probably about a month after wisdom tooth removal. So at it's worst, maybe slightly more open then the first picture.
It's weird because now I don't make contact in back with the rubber bands on, just in front. Though they told me they would over-correct it to account for some inevitable relapse. I have a checkup next week, I really don't know what to expect.
I just have regular metal braces with a tongue crib. I also have the metal bands on my molars. My elastics are a box configuration around my canines and bicuspids.

Number in the bottom right is days since I've had my braces on. My sentence is 2.5 years.
Hey no thank you for your message. I really hope I can continue to follow your progress. What country do you live in?
My sentence is also 2-2.5 years seems to be the standard treatment time. My bite is continuing to close but appears to be much slower on the LF side. I go for my archwire change in 3 weeks. I think I am having elastics and two more TAD's at a later stage too, so still a long way to go. The only thing that really sucks now is the appliance as all the food get stuck in it which makes eating out a hassel. Its an exciting journey though. I was not keen on the surgical approach it may be the best method but no one is chopping bits of my face up. Look forward to following your progress.

I am from the US. I live in Los Angeles, California.
When I first had my tongue crib put in the assistant told me my days of eating bread were over lol. Mine goes from the front all the way back, it's pretty lame.
However, over time I've gotten used to it and I eat whatever I want. Between my water pik and orthodontic toothbrushes (the one with the single bristle at the end), I can keep it clean easily. I rinse/brush after I eat or drink anything that isn't water. And I water pik twice a day and floss manually each night.
I'm definitely curious to see how the TADs work out for you though, that was never mentioned to me. I will keep an eye on your thread. Good luck dude.

Hey, thanks. It will be good to follow your progress too.
Yeah when you first get the hardware fitted its not easy to eat. When I had the braces and appliance fitted, all I could eat was ice cream and really soft foods for like 3 weeks. Now I am pretty much able to eat anything.
I havent had much progress since my last adjustment so am abit concerned. The right side is closing up nicely but things on the left seem to be quite static. Heres hoping. Will update soon.

They told me it would take a while. My orthodontist was pretty surprised at how quickly my bite closed up.
I had a check-up about a week ago and they gave me two new wires and moved my rubber bands in the same box formation to my back teeth. It was very painful the first 2 days but it's alright now. I haven't noticed any change from that yet, but it's only been a week.
Just be patient, it takes some time but if you do what you are told, it will work out.
Hi guys I just wanted to update my progress. I went to the orthdontist on Tuesday for my 6 weekly check up and reactivation of the appliance. You can see that I continue to get progress, but the left side is taking longer for teeth to contact. The reason for this is because one of the elastics on the appliance snapped and I did not get it fixed by the ortho, so treatment on that side was halted for about a month. I feel like a righ doh. However, I have lots of contact on the right side and the left now appeare to be catching up. The ortho is amazed by the results and hopes that I will get full closuer bearing in mind I still have another 26 months of treatment left. Again she knows little about possible stability. I am yet to start wearing elastics and have the final two TAD's inserted on the lower gum (apparently this will happen later during the treatment) at a later date. The bottom teeth also seem to becoming less crowdered. Overall I am happy with the progress but wish things would move faster. Still thats orthdontics for you (slow and gradual improvment). Have a good weekend all
PS sorry about the big picture I suck at anything related to technology!

I am also doing a non surgical treatmetn of an open bite. I had four consults and two out of the four orthos said surgery. I'm about 1-2 months away from debracing and am very very happy with how the elastics have worked.
Welcome to this forum!
That is good to hear that you are also doing a non surgical treatment of an openbite and that it all worked out so well for you with the elastics. Did you only have an open bite or also a crossbite or other issues?
How long have you been in braces? Did you ortho managed to close your open bite? How severe was your open bite?
Maybe you could post some before-after pictures, that is always so encouraging to see!
I wish you very good luck with the last bit of your treatment before debanding!
Hey, guys good to know people are in a similar position. I am actually heading to the Ortho today for my adjustment. I have been in braces for over 5 months now!! Cant believe how quick the time has gone. Progress has been steady, especially on the right side and I now only have a 2-2.5 mm gap. However, the left side is still considerbaly open which and I really dont know why. I am quite concerned. Hopefully will start on elastics soon, fingers crossed!
