What I have learned:

1. It's better to smile with teeth showing rather than trying to hide the braces...

2. I never thought I'd miss gum sooooo much!!

3. The dental products have become my favorite section in grocery stores/drugmarkets, etc.

4. no one cares about your braces

5. Dentists, Orthos aren't so bad after all!

6. Being able to bite into food is a wonderful thing... something I can't wait to start again once my braces are off

7. How much strength, determination, etc. it takes to get braces...there are bad days, good days...pain...no pain...everyday holds something new.

8. Mirrors are good friends

9. Oral hygiene becomes an obsession

10. Water and lip balm become a true necessity!

In the spirit of things here's 10 things to do before your braces come off.. (found this somewhere on another website :) )

1.Explain that you are a little nauseous...
Groan that you are not feeling well every time they put your hands in your mouth

2.Trade retainers or facebows with one of your friends...
Now why doesn't this fit?

3.Pay someone in your class to go for you...
He/she does not have to look anything like you

4.Eat lots of onions before you go...
DO NOT use a breathmint after eating the onions

5.Tell the orthodontist's assistant that you have a crush on him/her...
So what if they're a few years older than you

6.See if you can make your rubber bands shoot out when you open your mouth...
Your orthodontists' glasses should be a good target to shoot at

7.Tell the orthodontist how uncomfortable his chair is...
Move to a more comfortable position every 30 seconds

8.Wear a set of "dracula teeth" to your appointment instead of your retainer...
Tell them "I do not know how this could have happened, but last week my teeth shifted"

9.Paint pictures of little bugs onto your braces...
Oh that was just something I ate

10.Make up your own!

Okay - a few things I have learned

* I would much rather people mention my braces than just stare at my mouth when I'm talking.

* Approx 8 out of 10 people who do mention my braces say something like "I've always wanted to get braces"

* Bliss = being able to bite into a sandwich/cake/dinner when nobody is around to see or care how much of it gets stuck in your braces.

* I always thought wax was something candles were made from. Now I know what its really for!!

* As much as my hubby doesn't mind me having braces, he can't seem to stop staring at them and saying - "you are gonna look sooooo different"

* A nile file does not work on pokey out wires.

* Lip balm and yoghurt are my best friends.

* I have put on weight whilst wearing these things as I keep trying to prove to myself that I can eat without any problem. (and I agree with the saying - you always want what you can't have)

* I should've started this journey sooner.

* I love Archwired!!

1. The natural enemy of braces is the Filet-O-Fish
2. Sure this is a great journey, but I can't wait for the day when I get these ****ing things off!
3. Braces have taught me to love my teeth and care for them
4. I am no longer ashamed to smile and maintain eye contact
5. The waterpik is the greatest invention ever for braces-wearers
6. I wish I had done this 20 years ago, but I'm so happy I'm doing it now
7. Very few people at work brush their teeth at lunchtime
8. I never realised that other peoples' perfect teeth are not perfect at all
9. I still pinch myself when I think how I am going to have a beautiful smile - I used to think that was for other people only
10. I am so looking forward to biting into a sandwich and leaving a perfect arch impression

And yeah, it's funny how paranoid I was about getting metal braces. Now I realise that no-one else cares.

Turrrtle, I noticed you had to wait THREE MONTHS between your consult and actually getting your braces. How did you get through that? I feel like I'm going MAD waiting! I had my consult 1/12, and have to wait until the end of February.
DAMN the theory of relativity!

1) I've become obsessed with everyone else's teeth and can't stop looking
2) I miss gum
3) It's OK to eat wax and elastics, they won't hurt you
4) I can shoot water really far out of the gaps in my teeth in the shower
5) I can shoot water really far out of the gaps in my teeth at people when I don't really mean to, it's called gleeking
6) I can't whistle the regular way but I can through my teeth
7) People mistake me even more for younger than I am
8) After a while, people aren't embarassed anymore to tell you that you have stuff in your teeth and it doesn't embarass you either
9) Nail clippers are your friend if you're on vacation and something comes unraveled
10) You can eat anything with a knife and fork and look good doing it, don't let anybody tell you otherwise

and one more for good measure...

Don't pick anything out of your teeth with a paper clip 'cause it's nails on a chalkboard creepy.

YES!!! The first time I saw a particular person I knew after I got my braces, he didn't say anything about them. But the whole time we were talking, he kept licking his teeth and lips.

It's wierd isn't it though? The funny thing is, being so self-conscious of my teeth I used to do the same thing...HAHAHHAHA...

It's funny sometimes tho. It's like you can almost see them trying to remember if you have had braces the whole time or not.

This one lady I was talking to suddenly blurted out..."OH!!...You have bands!!! How long have you had them? The whole time???!!!" HAHAHAHA...Took me a while to get it, she's old school, from when braces WERE bands...LOL...I must have looked rather dumbfounded....
