Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymore

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I plan on getting metal upper and lower. I am not willing to give up coffee or deal with yellow bands.
Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I'm planning to get all metal on April 11th. In addition to the improved effectiveness of silver brackets, I prefer the look of all metal versus ceramic with the metallic wire. The ceramics may look like there is something stuck on teeth and I am concerned about staining. My orthodontist and his advisor highly recommended metal instead of ceramic. I also have crowns that metal sticks better to.
Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
One of the things I said to my orthodontist was that I wanted Damon self-ligating braces because according to the Damon website, the treatment time was shorter. He kind of just sighed and then said, "I really wish that Damon would stop saying that on their site. In my experience there is no difference in treatment time. Your treatment will take two years maybe more." I was flabbergasted and really taken aback. But I ended up deciding to go with the metal brackets because at my age I really could not see me mucking about with different coloured ligatures. I'm not really interested in having "fun" with my braces. I just want to get my teeth fixed and get on with my life. I know. I'm probably very boring. But at the grand old of age of 54 I felt like I was a bit "old" to be trying to look like a teenager even though my youngest son TOLD me I looked like a teenager when he first saw me a few weeks after I got my braces put on. Hmmm.......

Hi Dee
I am getting traditional metal and they are not self ligating ones so I will deal with the colours lol. I am going to start off with smoke or silver until i get used to them and my teeth start moving, then i might try light blue or light pink, depending on how confident i get
I am 30 and think oh well, colours might make me feel a bit better about them once they are on for a while lol

I think colour is an individual thing. Some people love it, others not. I have no interest in trying bright colours. I have considered getting something loud for my final month in them but I'm not sure I will. I love the fact that mine are so discreet.
My 13 year old has had silver ligs on her metal braces for the last 3 months. She changed her mind this past adjustment and went hot pink and has complained about the colour ever since. She says she can't wait to get her silvers back on and will not be going with anything else for the rest of her treatment (this surprised me a lot, I thought she'd be all about the colour).

I haven't started treatment yet but had in mind to get metal braces for all the good reasons already outlined. Following my first appointment last week, my orthodontist went through the options and recommended metal upper and lower which is good for me!

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I didn't read all the posts, just thought I'd share my expirience. First time I had braces they were all traditional... you know, with the colorful bands, red white and blue at the4th and red green and white at christmas, lol... but this time around I am not 16 and adorable and stylin with all my other friends at school and work. I am an adult that is 30. I am doing the damon braces... so they automatically do not have colors (woo hoo) and rightnow I'd prefer the clear because they are less noticeable because I have kids and I have had people say how that I should be saving my money formy kids and so ya know what, I'd prefer people not know as much as possible, it's none of their business. So that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
my husband would rather the metal cause they are 100 less but we'll see what I end up with, either way I'm getting the damon braces, seems more convetnional since I will have to only go in for fitting once every 6-8 weeks instead of 4.

It's sad that some people think having braces is ostentatious, like zipping around in a BMW while your kids starve or something. It's a medical procedure that is more about function than cosmetics in most cases. Anyone who looks down on anyone with braces is being extremely unfair!
Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I'm getting Damon clears on top and metal on lowers. This was the only option for me as I'm allergic to nickel, but I wouldn't have minded getting full metal. I just want a healthy mouth : )
Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I am 30 and I read alot in these forums about people saying "i am not a kid, i dont want to deal with colour braces, basically making me feel like I am not allowed to have any colour on my braces and people would just look at me like I was a little kid if I did... and I am going traditional metal and I will have to pick ligatures but I will go smoke or gray to begin with, but then once I get used to them I will embrace my braces and give a bit of colour a go. I don't have kids, I have a boyfriend and he is being amazing and supportive of it all, I don't have other friends with braces, but I just think why not, might as well try to make them fun. Everyone has their own idea of what they want and as long as they do their job, its not really a big deal what type of braces you haveAvalon Rose wrote:I didn't read all the posts, just thought I'd share my expirience. and also, those people who say to you that you should be spending your money on your kids, stuff them, you are doing something for you, something medical that will improve your life etc and it is none of their business so good on you for sticking to your guns!Avalon Rose wrote:I didn't read all the posts, just thought I'd share my expirience. Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I have kids too, but you know what? They're ALL getting braces, I'm not letting them go without so I can have and I'm sure if yours need them in the future they'll get them too! It annoys me that people make you feel like you're not doing the best by your children because you got braces (you collectively not you personally!).
As for colours, I have no problem with adults who want or have colours. I think they're cool. I like the fact that mine aren't very visible but I don't care if someone else has them and theirs are.

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
Hi, I'm getting metal brackets in a couple of months as I think they look better and will allow the orthodontist more options to give me a better result. Any brace attached to the front of your teeth will be visible to some extent. Discoloured elastics / brackets will rapidly increase the visibility of clear braces whereas metal brackets will not be effected in the same way. Clear braces look great on some people but it comes down to personal choice.

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
Well thanks everyone, sometimes we need encouragement!! Ilove that Imgetting the Damon Braces, but at the sametime now I ma little sad that I won't get SOME type of color... Imean at least last time I had that option, now it's nothing... I started out with greys last timeand ventured out to whites, and after a while I was like begging for hot pink and lime green and I even tried black.... I'm sure if I had traditional braces I would have went with color eventually. I am still trying to talk myself into doing clears. Id love clear, that way I'd be more inconspicuous. lol. I don't even think I spelled that right. Ha.
as for my kids... Right now my oldest two have perfectly gorgeous straight teeth, Im sure that will change... my parentsforked out the money for braces and still my teeth moved, it's just a fact of life, so if by age 16 my daughter hates her teeth, well, we willprobably get her braces, if not she has the option to do it once she gets married too... I dont have dental insurance so either way it's out of pocket... I love my kids and I try my hardest to do what they need. Nobody lives with me to tell me how I am putting myself first, most of the time the kids are first and me second, SOOOO FOR ONCE I"M THINKING ABOUT MYSELF! Woo hoo.
ETA: sorry about the spaces, my sweet 1 yr old ripped the space bar off now it only works half the time, and easier to explain than to go back and try to fix it.
