Can anyone let me know, how many people's orthodontist made them get an exam and cleaning before getting braced?

My ortho requires a recent exam and cleaning before braces. He and my general dentist also strongly recommend a cleaning every 3 months and an exam every 6 months.

One of the girls at my ortho's office said she hadn't been to the dentist in years when the ortho she used put braces on her. She said it was just dumb luck that she didn't have any problems with her teeth during the treatment.

My prev cleaning was about 3-4 months before being braced, so they told me to get a cleaning. If its 3 months or more, I'd definitely recommend a cleaning. I have gingivitis, so it was even more imperative in my case

Mine

LOL But I think if you are going to spend all that money on braces, you might as well have a check up and a cleaning. ykwim

I've also had to get all other dental work done needed first. My last appt for work isn't untill April 18th. I'll have a impacted wisdom tooth extracted and one tooth filled.
Then a month after that appt I'll get to start the braces.

It has all worked out though. I needed more work done than I thought, so I had to take away from my braces down payment money for it.
So the extra time between appts lets me save back up.
It would have been hard to pay the monthly payments and have extra work done.

mine too... first did all fillings needed, and regular cleaning. then gum evaluation by a specialist, deep cleaning... cost 1/3 of my braces money but it's worth it (I hope)

I really do recomment you go for a check-up and cleaning before you get braces on.

I had everything done before I went to see my ortho and at my consult, he had asked me if I had a cleaning and if my teeth were fine.

I had a cleaning the day before my braces went on. I also had 7 cavities filled while I was in braces. Luckily, 5 of them were on my bottom teeth and when they were filled, I only had a top brace. I did get 2 or 3 filled with the tops on, though.

I've had one cleaning since being braced, and I'm due for another one.

I had a check up and clean from my regular dentist the day before my upper braces went on. As my last visit had been 5 months prior, it made sense to do this before the braces were placed.

Before my ortho treatment started, I was examined by a periodontist to make sure my teeth, roots, gums, bones, etc. were healthy before proceeding. I also had a periodontal cleaning, which, based on the fact that it was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced, I believe is much more intensive than a regular dental cleaning

My ortho's recommendation is a cleaning every three months, alternating between my regular dental cleaning and an ortho cleaning.
