I have noticed that the gum is pulling away from one of my bottom teeth. (only one) I never noticed it before my braces...Does anyone know what the cause of this is? and what problems this will cause?

Kiwi, my gums are in great shape. I don't know why this one is receding...it isnt red or swollen and no pockets either...it's really weird... I definately am going to make an appt.....I'll keep you posted......Thanks for your reply

Your gums don't have to be red and swollen to be receeding. Originally my orthodontist was trying to straighten my bottom teeth without extractions and by doing so the gum receeded on one of my bottom front teeth. I had to go to periodontist and have a gum graft done.

Naomi, that sounds like exactly what is happening to me. My gums were fine 3 months ago and now that my bottom teeth are moving I have noticed my gum line receding only on one tooth. What is a gum graft? Is that a out of the pocket expense ( like braces) or does insurance pay for that? Is it painful?

A gum graft is done by taking a piece of skin from the roof of your mouth and having it sewn to the area where the gum has receeded. My insurance covered a good portion of the procedure otherwise it would have costed approx. $700 CDN.

If you use a waterpik on a speed that is too high may be what is causing your gums to receed. My Orthodontist said this is a big problem and to use the waterpik on medium to low speed.
