Routine Teeth Cleaning - Can I With Wedges?

#1 Post by IdRatherBeRiding »

Hi everyone. I haven't posted in quite some time, but I'm happy to say I've made amazing progress. Just a year ago, I had a huge gap where they removed a baby tooth that never came out and now my gaps are closed, my bottom arch is set and the final work of refining the position of my upper arch is progressing.

I've got a slight cross-bite left and my Ortho is moving my molars over with wedges. They're clear plastic that sit around the brackets between the wire and the tooth.

I've only had the wedges for about 3-4 months now, but I have a routine cleaning appointment scheduled for the end of the month and I'm not sure if I shouldn't cancel it. The wedges are really difficult to work around when I'm trying to floss and I can't even imaging the hygenist trying to clean the teeth, since there's not much of the outer surface of the tooth visible with the wedges on.

Now the wedges are only on my upper molars. I'd still be able to have the bottom arch cleaned and polished. But is it even worth it?

Should I just wait another 5-6 moths for my braces to be off completely? Has anyone had their teeth cleaned with wedges on?

Thanks for the advice.

I don't have wedges, but I'd suggest calling your dentist's office and see what they have to say. Dentists are used to working around orthodontic appliances, so it may not be a problem for them. You could also call your orthos office and see what they suggest.

Good luck!

When I had my braces, they usually cleaned my teeth with the Cavitron. This device blasts water onto your teeth. That Cavitron could clean just about anything, IMO.
