Hi all,

My ortho told me at my last appt that I have a scissor bite after I mentioned that even with my teeth clenched I can feel the surface of 2 pre molars with my tongue on my right hand side. I've never heard of this and he didn't elaborate - I don't know whether this means I've got to put up with it or if he will fix it!

Anyone else got this?

Sorry, i tried googling this for you but it was all about dogs Im sort of curious now. But i know what you mean, even with my teeth clenched i can still feel a small bit of the surface of my teeth, but my bite isnt even half way to being fixed yet.

If anyone can enlighten me please do.

Is that maybe the same as a crossbite? That's when some of the top teeth bite inside the bottom teeth.

How wierd for an ortho to say you have scissor bite. In dogs this is the proper occlusion. it means the molars all line up properly, the canines do not over lap and the the incisors of the upper jaw rest on but not tip to tip with the lowers. not sure what to make of it. maybe give your ortho a call and ask.

I have the same issue going on. When I bite down, I can feel the surfaces
of my lower left premolars and first molar. Incisors like your centrals and
laterals cut like scissors when having a normal good bite. That way we can
so to speak cut with these. When you bite down, they work just like the
blades of a scissor. But premolars and molars do not cut, they grind the
food. Therefor normally, they contact surface to surface, each uneven
surface of one fitting in that of the corresponding other tooth. When they
work like a scissor too, this can be when the uppers are tipped outwards
and the lowers inwards. Or another combination that makes that those
do not contact their surfaces but contact their sides. I hope I am a bit
understandable here. Anyway, I have that quite badly, and I happened to
speak about it this morning when I had an adjustment. My ortho said it is
very easily correctable with elastics and the right archwire.

I'm glad you say it's easily correctable - I think half the trouble is my lower arch is narrower than the top. I have an adjustment on Monday so I'll see if he will do anything interesting then...
