Hi All,

I posted this question on another thread but I thought maybe I should post it on here. My brace day is Monday Aug 14th. That same day I will be getting a Nance appliance. Has anyone ever had one of these and can you tell me what your experiance was like?

I have a Nance (or had one till last week) and will be having one again soon. It's a holding device generally used to keep molars in place to stop them drifting forward into extraction gaps.

I found it took a few days to get used to and made certain sounds hard to pronounce for a while but I soon got used to it. Make sure you keep it clean underneath the plastic button as food can get lodged there. A Waterpik is very useful for this purpose, or you can buy floss with a stiffened end which you can thread underneath it.

If you notice any soreness or swelling round the button then contact your ortho quickly because it could mean that the Nance is too tight and is cutting in. I had to have mine removed for that reason.

I think of all the different palatal devices available, the Nance is about the least fearsome good luck with it.

Thank you Lisa and Lucy! I really appreciate your input. I'm going to keep track of your blogs. This site is great! I've learned so much more than I ever imagined. Knowing what to expect really helps ease the tension and stress and learning from other's experineces is invaluable. Should be interesting I didn't realize that food could get stuck under the button. My mouth will be getting so much of my time and attention it sounds like. Thanks again!!!

Mine was a piece of tomato skin too Lucy! I couldn't get superfloss under my Nance because the button was right at the top of my mouth and I just couldn't get floss up that far. This sounds gross I know, but I had to get hubby to poke the tomato skin out with a toothpick! Good job he loves me eh?

The next day I went out and bought a Waterpik

But yes Rainyday, stuff CAN and does get under that button and the feeling of it being there is really irritating - and if its left there long enough will either drive you insane or go mouldy and give you bad breath! So either way, check under it daily (use a little dental mirror to look). If you get a Waterpik it's easy to clean underneath, just put the nozzle up tight against the edge of the Nance button and turn on. It will flush out any gunge and leave you 100% clean and fresh again!

Apart from the incident in my blog which led me to need the nance removed in a hurry, I really had no bother with it and I would say it only took me 3 or 4 days before I could pretty well forget it was there.

I dont get food stuck in mine though...
but i do floss it just in case!

The nance has a tendency to get tighter as time goes on and teeth move. It can push against the palate in some instances and that is a BIG problem, best see the ortho ASAP if you feel any discomfort. It should not hurt at all.

The size of the acrylic button varies, some are larger and difficult to thread floss under. The waterpik, as someone mentioned, is the best way to clean underneath if you have trouble with the floss.

HI All, For some reason I could not log on with my old account so i had to create a new one...I'm now RainyDay2 (pretty original huh) . so anyways I'm not braced and "nanced" Doing good with the Nance but I wake up in the middle of the night with so much pain!!! During the day I'm fine but I don't know what it is that wakes me up in the middle of the night with so much pain. I don't know if its the button or the braces. I hope. Not to mention that I got 2 first biscupids removed 4 days after getting braced. I don't know what to blame. Any ideas???

Is the roof of your mouth what is causing you pain? If so, call your ortho and have the nance looked at. They can pull it down for you.

Yes. I might have to do that, because i have a hard time putting the waterpik under there to clean it! It must be too tight.

RainyDay I also found that the Nance was tighter at night, and where I had those mini-implants put in (that necessitated my getting the Nance taken out in a hurry) they swell up at night but go down during the day.

I'm sorry it's happening to you too, but kind of glad I'm not the only one! I'm going to ask my ortho about it on Wednesday when I go, but if you get any input from yours in the meantime, I'd be interested to hear it.

Thanks Lisa! I too am glad that I'm not the only one feeling this at night. I will let you know what I find when I call on Monday, in the mean time let me know what you hear. I'd like to compare notes!
