And drink through a straw so you don't swish the coke throughout your mouth.

Hi Matty_Oz!

My ortho's assistant told me coke was a once-a-week treat. So go for it- just take extra care with your cleaning routine.

Yes I heard that theory aswell.. I never drink full fat coke anyway but if I do have sugary drinks I have a gulp of water after and brush my teeth about an hour afterwards.

Hi Matty!
Congrats on getting braced :D

As to the Coke, try substituting to a non-sugar variety, like Diet or Zero. I drink entirely too much diet Coke, but always brush afterwards. If you don't want to substitute, I'd recommend making normal Coke a treat, and definitely stick with the straw plan!

Hi Matty,
Congrats on the braces! Upon seeing some of the responses to your "is drinking coke okay" question, I thought I'd give you this link from a post back on 8/18.....it clears up a lot of the misconceptions about soft drinks. For example, drinking diet soda isn't exactly a better alternative as diet and lo-cal soft drinks are still very acidic. I still drink coke a couple of times a week, but I try my best to make sure it's with a meal, and I follow up with a few swishes of water and hold off on brushing for a little while, just like Meryaten described (you'll see that referenced in the post linked below also). The way I see it, most things are okay in moderation (with the exception of hard stuff that will break your brackets!!). Nothing beats a nice cold Coke and I don't think I could ever give it up completely, because like you, I love my Coke  !!
