Hey Everybody!! First off, I just want say that this board is VERY encouraging. Everyone is so positive and it’s refreshing to have a place to go and talk with people who understand because they’ve been there. So kudos to you all!

On to my dilemma... I went in for a consultation today, and I was told that I get my records done and braced tomorrow! This is a little weird to me, because I always thought there would be a separate visit for doing the records and the actual bracing day for the orthodontist to go over the x-rays and see if there is something he missed in the initial consult. Should I be concerned about how quickly they are able to put my braces on?

Here’s some background information as well:
The office IS small, but they have two other offices in the city that are larger.
I talked with a lady who was braced at this ortho and she had nothing but positive things to say.
I’ve been to three other orthodontists and this ortho basically gave me the same “diagnosisâ€

that's fast.

I will have my records taken tomorrow and spacers put in. Braces after 01.17 because I have one cavity to be filled.

Sounds odd though, maybe they need money?!

I wouldn't be concerned. I had my records done and spacers/brackets applied all in the same day. I was actually glad things got going so fast. I didn't have anytime to change my mind

I'd be concerned if you didn't know 1) that you need treatment, and 2) what kind of treatment is needed (to an extent; I assume you're not an orthodontist).

The thing is: do you want this to be your orthodontist? Once they install the brackets, it'll be harder to undo that decision.

It sounds like their diagnosis is consistent with the others, which is a good sign. But it also sounds like they want to get startted right away, so I'd question their motivation - is it to help you get your problem solved ASAP, or to secure the income?

Sorry to sound cynical, but orthodontic treatment usually costs a lot of money (to most people), and unless you're going to die without it (not likely), immediate orthodontic treatment is not generally necessary.

The bottom line is: this is YOUR decision. NOT theirs.

If you trust them (and since their diagnosis is consistent with the others, it seems like you probably can), since you seem to know that you do need treatment, it seems you probably don't need to worry too much.

But DO mind that it is YOUR decision to make.

I would be concerned because usually they go over the records and the models to divise a treatment plan. How are they going to do that the same day? And then they should be discussing the treatment options with you before they decide which way to go. Unless of course, yours is a very simply and straightforward case.

I would go along with what the others have said.

So do you all think that getting my records done and braced in the same day is something that I should be worried about?

I'm not sure that this is necessarilly something to worry about it probably just means that they've got a space available. However if you're not sure then you should take your time, they're your teeth.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I went ahead and got braced today!! Only uppers though. Everything went pretty smoothly and they gave me lots of goodies, so I don’t need to buy anything for cleaning except the floss (they gave me the needle and regular floss), oh and that plaque-revealing rinse. They also gave me a t-shirt with the office and ortho’s name in BIG letters. Guess I’ll be a poster child for them.. one day.. maybe.. at home.

He didn’t have me questioning him once so I feel great about how quickly I was able to get it done! Now all I have to do is get used to these freaking things.

Oh my problem is some spacing so I guess it’s pretty straightforward.
