Um....I think they tie a string to the brackets and a toaster and then throw it out the window  Sorry, I couldn't resist - my poor dd - has a loose tooth that won't come out and is about ready to try the toaster trick so the tooth fairy will visit  I don't know the answer to your question, but there are many on the board who do. I have read on here several times that it is very simple and not painful. Congratulations on being so close to the end!

Hi Anni,
I haven' t had my braces removed yet, but have had some of my brackets taken off and repositioned. They just pop them of with a little tool, it feels sorta weird but doesn't hurt at all (or at least that has been my experience) Then they used what sounds like a drill to remove all the glue. Again, this doesn't hurt, it does feel like they are going to grind your teeth down to nothing though, its just a weird sensation. Then they buff em up a bit and your all done. It really is not a big deal and of course is even less of one when you know they are finally coming off for good!

Ok here's a added addition to this question. I have molar bands, anyone had them removed.

Had that done too! When the took out my expander they removed my molar bands and had to solter on hooks for my TPA. So they were taken off then put back on. I could lie to you and tell you it didn't hurt but it did. Not terribly, but it was somewhat uncomfortable. The good news is that its pretty fast. They have a tool that cuts the band, and then they just pull it right off. You feel pressure when they are getting ahold of the band, and then a bit of tugging as they are taking it off. You will be fine, especially if you don't have any dental work in your molars. Seems crowns and fillings make it a bit more uncomfortable, probably because the tooth is not quite as stable to begin with, but if your teeth are healthy then it really is not a huge deal.

No Delag, they use now the door. Since the glues are now better, they need
more force. People in the waiting room ask what all this door slamming is. Maybe
the ortho is very angry today. No, no, he is removing braces today ...

Sorry Anni, couldn't resist either. But you should not worry at all. I find it still
amazing that during the 30+ months that I had braces, not a single bracket came
loose although so many elastics and wires pulled at them like crazy, and still they
could be removed to easily. My teeth were very sensitive at the time when it
happened, and still it did not hurt a bit. Even all the bands came loose without
any pain. Only this one that didn't want to go. They sawed it in pieces to be able
to remove it. Took some time, gave a nasty smell but did not hurt at all. So, don't
worry about this, it"ll be a breeze !

OK, I may very well be wrong about this, but...

... I'm sure I remember reading somewhere (most likely somewhere here on the board ) that the ortho prepares each tooth with a thin layer of the bonding agent, then bonds (or glues) each bracket to this thin layer of glue. When s/he goes to remove the bracket, s/he uses pliers to squeeze or flex the curved rear sticking surface of the bracket, which breaks the bonding agent between the bracket and the tooth, 'popping' the bracket off without damaging the tooth.

Of course, I may be wrong, it's happened before..

For what it's worth, I've had 2 x brackets removed completely painlessly, but it was only about half an hr after they went on...

Thanks everyone for replying.

I'm still really nervous but I'm sure I'll be fine.
I'm not sure if I should make a new thread for this or not but I have another question. Has anyone else had an experience where their teeth are more sensitive after getting braces?
