Help...banded crown just fallen out!

#1 Post by dramaqueendaisy »

Need advice...b day in two wks, already got molar bands on four and brackets right at the back up top but half an hour ago the crown with a molar band on just fell out! What do I do? Who do I ring first tomorrow my ortho or my dentist? Am soooooo annoyed cos it'll mean more work and xtra cost. I guess the crown would not have fallen out if it hadn't had a band on it. Have just forked out nearly £200 xtra to have my extractions. And I really don't want a delay on my bday...have had the bands in now since feb 2nd and am more than ready for the full braces.

Should I be annoyed about this or is it a risk that I took? My ortho said my crown might give me some grumbles later on when the brace was on but I didn't think he meant it would fall right out! It feels and tastes really horrible where it's dropped out...am off to swill my mouth out with saline...yeuch!

What do you guys think??

How awful for you Daisy. Better that it happened 2 weeks before brace day rather than the night before. Call both and ask for advice. You're extractions were expensive, were they done privately? Mine (2) only cost £1.50 but that was an NHS dentist.

My ortho warned me that there is a slight danger of crowns coming loose and advised me to get work done on one, which I have. However this is so upsetting for you before you even get your brace on.

Good luck with getting it fixed. Bumpy start for you but hopefully once you get it sorted it will be plain sailing.

As long as the crown is in good shape they can most likely just cement it back on.

True, but it is much more likely to fall out again in the future. Crown's just don't fall out with extra force applied to them unless there is a problem. It could be poor fit due to recurrent decay, cement washed away from an open margin, etc. It is highly likely it will be re-cemented, but my guess is that it already has quite a few years worth of service and will need to be addressed in the future.

Good Luck,
Rory

Thanks for your helpful words guys! Have rung both my ortho and the dentist...spoke to the nurse at the ortho's and she commiserated but told me to ring the denist. The dental nurse there told me to put the crown back in with vaseline on the inside but it still keeps falling out! Have an appointment on Monday lunchtime with the dentist to get it sorted out...more expense!

I've got to let my ortho know what the dentist has done or plans to do when he's had a look. I really hope it's sraightforward and I can have my braces fitted as planned!

And yes Joney, my extractions were vastly expensive!! I have a private dentist now...you can't get a NHS one in my part of the UK for love nor money. It's a nightmare. :-(* Anyway...let's hope there's not too much more work needed!

Cheers Guys...I'll keep you posted.

Hi Dramaqueendaisy. I had one come off when my braces were removed. I ended up stopping at the dentist where my husband goes and they checked it out and recemented it. (My dentist was not availabe). When I explained the situation to my dental hygenist, she said if it ever happens again to put it back on temperarily with some dental cream that is used for denture use.
Had Damon 3 / Smart Clips for almost 2 years
Now in Hawley upper 10 hours/day, permanent lower retainers

If you have to wait until Monday may I recommend putting a little Fixodent or a similar denture adhesive in the crown to help keep it on. Vaseline will do nothing to help keep it in your mouth. Realistically, as long as you do not have any symptoms (sensitivity or pain) with the crown off you should be OK for a few days. I have seen teeth supra-erupt with only a few days out of occlusion, so it is best to keep it in if possible.

Good Luck,
Rory

Thanks. I have no pain or sensitivity...am washing my mouth out regularly. Of course my crown is quite cumbersome because of the band and the tubey thing on the side. Only a day and a half to go and I shall get sorted...hopefully.

Positive thoughts and all that...

You're not going to believe this...my dentist cemented the crown back in today...it fell out in less than 6 hours. Am really worried now...obviously I'll go back tomorrow but if it can't last for 6 hours there's no way it'll hold with a brace. What if they can't re-crown it? There will be no-where for the band to go and since my extractions I've only got a molar, the crown gap, another bicuspid (too small for a molar), a gap and then we're up to my canine!

At least the dentist didn't charge me today...small mercies I suppose.

Daisy, I can really feel your frustration and worry. I had a similar thing happen when I started my brace journey. I had to get a crown and deep filling replaced. Then another filliing in front of the crown fell out, then when that was replaced it fell out after an hour. All is sorted now but I was feeling very fed up. Since then my brace journey has been fine but it was a difficult time. Back to the dentist for you again. I know the dentist seemed to be my second home for a while there in November but thankfully I haven't had to visit for a while now.

Hopefully once all this is sorted out for you then your braces will be a doddle. I know that for me the whole brace experience has been a lot easier than the dentist experience.

Good luck tomorrow.

Thankyou so much Joney...you've made me feel much better. :-* I shall get back to that dentist tomorrow...I guess what ever has to be done will be done (I just won't think about the cost...! )

All I'm hoping is that they'll still be able to brace me on March 9...it's been in big letters on my calendar for weeks! And I hope you're right...let's hope the brace experience is a doddle!!
