what does teeth cleaning involve????
I have an appointment tomorrow with the dental higenist for a thorough cleaning, and was wondering if it will hurt, ??? what is it like??should I take a painkiller beforehand?
Have you ever had a cleaning before? If not...you might be sensitive. Taking a tylonol before hand might not be a bad idea, but I would call and ask. The reason I say this is...if you happen to be sensitive your gums might bleed a little and you might be sore, but don't worry too much about it. You'll be fine I'm sure. Call and ask what you should do to prepare.

My first cleaning was about 4 years ago, I am 48 now! In the UK the hygenist thing is for private patients only, I conclude that because as an NHS patient I only ever saw an hygenist once and all she did was try to tell me how to floss. I moved to Canada in 1997 and managed to avoid the dentist completly until 2003, I thought it was time!!
It took two sessions for a complete clean and there was pain involved, I was offered a numbing injection but decided to put up with the pain. Since then I have been regularly, had my cleanings every 6 months, some restorations and my chosen ortho and the two other ortho's I saw all said that I was in pretty good condition, not perfect but good.
So, if you have been careful with your hygene you should be fine, if not, expect some pain but believe me, it's worth getting it done.
My dentist is now suggesting that I visit every 3 months because of the braces, I'm not so sure about this, my 30 minute routine every night should be enough, any thoughts??
As it happens, my next dental check up is about 3 months after being braced, will be interesting to see what the Doc says then.

Not true in my case. Even prior to getting braced I saw my hygienist 3 - 4 times a year cost £26 on the NHS and money well spent. She is fantastic and I always feel like a movie star when I leave after the sessions.In the UK the hygenist thing is for private patients only

I go every 6 months and have since college (11+ years now). I've experienced some discomfort now and again during cleaning but not pain. And I've had a couple of "rough" hygenists through the years.
Tim, I would ask your ortho what he/she recommends as far as frequency of professional cleanings go. My dental insurance pays for 2 dental cleanings a year (no ortho coverage..I'm too old!). If my dentists wanted me coming more often I'd tend to wonder why and the cynic in me would think he were only suggesting it so he could obviously get paid more. If you're not going to experience any more out of pocket expenses by going more frequently, it wouldn't hurt to get one every 3 months. Otherwise, I'd ask the ortho his opinion first. You could probably even call the ortho office and ask that over the telephone.

well I went for the cleaning, and just wanted to let everyone know it was fine....no pain at all...it was great to have that done I really feel clean teeth after it.
she did say I had good oral higene and healthy gums yay!! im so proud, especially because I always feel my teeth are rather yellowed looking, the regular dentist told me that my enamel is a funny colour, posibly due to antibiotics use when I was a kid?? I dont know?
and...the higenist was so nice, recomended i use small interdental brushes to go inbetween teeth where I didnt even know I had spaces till today..lol
