Normally the wires used early in treatment are round in cross section. Because the slots in the brackets are square, the round wire can rotate inside the bracket, allowing the teeth to tip.
Once the teeth are more or less aligned (straight) then a square or rectangular wire is used instead. Because it has corners it can't spin freely inside the bracket slot but is held in place by those "corners". The force or torque produced by the resistance of the wire against the bracket allows for uprighting and more precise movement of the teeth.
