Can anyone explain this?

I got braces on Tuesday and he glued these bite blocks on the back of my two front teeth. The only contact my teeth make are my bottom two front teeth against these bite blocks; nothing else touches. I'm living on soup and yogurt. (Sigh)
My question is this: These bite blocks were put here to prevent me from biting down and knocking off the brackets. My ortho said they will have to be on "At least until the 10-week visit." (Sigh). So when they are taken off, what will be different? I mean, won't I still be in danger of biting down and knocking my brackets off? Are these bite blocks changing something with my bite? I didn't even think to ask my ortho, as I was still in shock from having all this stuff glued in my mouth. I was having so much trouble speaking, I probably couldn't have asked him anyway.
This will all be worth it in the end...this will all be worth it in the end...
