Post-brace smiles with extractions

#1 Post by Neil McGinn »

Hello.

Firstly my apologies if this thread is in the wrong forum or the topic has been covered previously. I have used the search function but became somewhat overloaded with information and wasn't able to accurately judge if this would be a repeat.

I'm 23 years old and am currently 6 months into my 2 year treatment with surgery. I have just recently met with my surgeon and discussed the normal issues and gave my feelings on how I would like to proceed with my treatment. I'm scheduled to have my lower jaw moved 5-6mm forward towards the end of the brace treatment, and may require 4 extractions.

If I may, I would like to make one request and ask one question if anyone would care to help. I would like to see the end result of orthodontic treatment that included 4 extractions and see pictures of smiles that are made up of 4 less teeth. Reading this comment back to myself I do believe it sounds somewhat demanding, but I would appreciate any pictures whether personal or of someone else.

My question relates directly to the extractions. I know that I will be keeping my wisdom teeth as they have replaced my 2nd molars in recent years. I believe that normally the 4 teeth that will be extracted are the 1st molars, but for some reason I feel I may have to get teeth closer to the center of smile removed, therefore creating a more visible impact. Therefore my question is; Can you have 4 extractions outside the molars? If so, this would make the above picture request slightly more difficult and somewhat justify the request itself I feel due to it being less common and more important in terms of appearance.

Thanks for all your help.

I had 4 second premolars extracted in september 2005 and im due to have my braces off this thursday after almost 21 months to the day. I must say that having the extractions hasnt really changed my profile or anything, i feel my teeth are alot nicer now and i've got rid of my buck teeth which made me really self concious.
I'll upload some photos later although i dont have any recent one's you'll hopefully be able to see how things were progressing and if i can find my camera i'll take some current ones, my last ones ever with braces on :D

Hi, :-1
About photos ... you need to spend time in the Braces Story Forum and you'll find pics of people who've had teeth removed due to orthodontic treatment. You'll usually find this information on the first page ... within the first couple of posts ... so it's not difficult to do.
Good tip from Karen! Besides, Lynn, the administrator of this web site, had 4 premolars extracted. The link to her photos is right on the main page. http://www.archwired.com/photos.htm

Good luck with your treatment :)

Thanks for the link! Her teeth are lovely and are smile is really nice.

I guess my fear was that my smile wouldn't be as good with 4 less teeth.
