Question about metal anchors?

Has anyone ever had to have anchors put in? My upcoming adjustment (in about 2.5 weeks) is going to entail my metal anchors being put in place and I am scared!!! 
My being a newbie at braces and all that goes with it i have no idea what to expect!! will it hurt? how bad? how long does it take? do they numb your mouth or put you all the way under? is it much pain afterwards? 
Has anyone ever had them and if you have any pointers for me on what to expect???
