does everyone have one of these?

#1 Post by stuckinabyss »

I have two metal bands around my molars (which hurt horribly and prevent me from chewing-does this sensation go away? Ive only had my braces a few days) anyway, i have this other wire that connects the two bands at the back of my teeth and its kinda big and gets in the way of me swallowing food, but that not the problem-its making my toungue really sore

I just wanna know if everyone has one of these and what they do to deal with it

You mean it spans the roof of your mouth? It sounds like a transpalatal arch which is used to maintain arch width at the back. Not everyone has one, but quite a few people do. I have one. Within a week or two, your tongue will get used to it and not feel so sore. The same with the bands making your teeth ache. You might find that rinsing your mouth a few times a day with a weak solution of salt in warm water will be soothing on your sore tongue. I used Anbesol for a few days too, which is an anaesthetic liquid. I just dabbed it on the really sore places and it took the edge off the discomfort.

Good luck! It does get better, honestly.

you're welcome :D If you use the search forum on this site for "TPA" or "palatal arch" you'll probably find some pics and stories about how other people have learned to live with theirs.

Hello! I have a palatal bar, and I know what you mean! They do hurt at first, the best thing for it are the warm salt water rinses, as Lisa mentioned. Also, I found that drinking a ton of cold water keeps the tounge swelling down. Good luck! :-)

I had the exact same thing!! The wire on the roof of your mouth, you'll get used to that fairly quickly. If you're like me, you will mess with it constantly with your tongue. Also the bands caused me some pain, not like sore pain, but like jaw pain, but it went away after about a month. They cut my wire about 4 months or so into treatment, but I still have the molar bands. The only complaint is they aggravate my tongue every now and then, especially if i talk a lot during the day. I just pop on some wax at night to give my tongue a rest!! It'll get better and you'll barely even notice it's there!!
