What's this in my mouth???

#1 Post by $urge337 »

So about 2 weeks ago i had 4 of my bicuspids removed. Last week i had an ortho. appt and they finally hooked my entire mouth with the wire (before the extractions, only a few of the front teeth were hooked). Anyhow i see that there are 4 plastic looking like tubes i guess you can say that the wired goes through. The tubes are only placed in front of the extraction gaps. Does anyone know what this is and what this does? I am wondering if this helps my gaps close or not. I also thought that power chains would go on my teeth after extractions but i wasn't given that either... (i know every case is different) but i just wanted to ask everyone if anyone had an idea of what the tube is/does.

THANKS!

Is it just over the wire where there are large spaces and therefore large expanses of open archwire? Is it just a clear plastic sleeve-like thing over the wire? Not a spring or anything?

If so, it's probably just there to protect the long lengths of wire from breakage and to stop it irritating your cheek. The thin wires used early in treatment can break fairly easily especially if there's a long expanse without a bracket.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Without a pic I'm not exactly sure what youre describing. :D

Yes it is just over the wire where there are large spaces. And yes a sleeve sounds better then my description of it LOL! it’s a gray plastic sleeve like thing hahaha. Not a spring that’s for sure. And your description makes great sense! This is my second type of wire I think. The first wire was the thin twisted-ropy kind and this one is not ropy but its still thinner so your explanation sounds about right. :) thanks!!!!
