A bracket popped off about 1 hour after braces went on!

#1 Post by danz23 »

Got braces on my top teeth today. Not a terrible experience, who would have thought that the lip retractors would be the worst part  . No pain yet (dont expect that to last!). Afterwards I was really hungry so I thought I should try and eat. We went to stand in line at McDonalds and I opened my mouth a bit and the bracket on one of my teeth thats partially covered by the one next to it popped off! Was lucky it happened in the same city as where my treatments being done cause I was just about to head back to the town where my family lives (three hours away!). Had to go back, my dentist put a new wire on. It's so so thin, hehe hope it is actually doing something! I'm slightly worried about the lack of pain! Think I need to read up on the strength/thickness of wires. Do they upgrade you to a thicker wire regularly if you're teeth are straightening? Want to post pics but only have my phone camera. I'm so not looking foward to flossing but theres already all sorts of stuff stuck in them. Anyway, will be interesting to see how tomorrow goes!

It was in the last week of treatment, ortho changed me out from a SS to a TMA on my lowers - trying to get everything as much into line before the lot came off today.

That's a pain you can't readily get Waterpiks in Oz or NZ. I've found mine invaluable especially in the few days after wire changes when flossing or the use of interdental brushes is just toooo uncomfortable.

Danz, those initial thin wires look too flimsy to do much, I agree. But if you take pics every couple of weeks or so (even just with your camera phone), I bet within 3 or 4 weeks you will notice that wire has straightened out from its original up-and-downy appearance. They are surprisingly effective for such thin and weedy-looking things.

Since we are kind of off-topic and I know that there are many people on this board who like "science stuff" ...

There are two good books on the chemistry of cooking. Both were written by chemists, I believe. The first is "CookSmart" by Shirley Corriher. And, the second is by Harold McGee - I don't know the exact title, but it's regarded as the bible on the science of cooking. Corriher's book has recipes (many of them very good) and McGee's doesn't.

So, if you want to know how to make your cookies crispy or chewy or if you want to know the differences between the gazillions of types of flour, these are for you!

Yep, you're right, Meryaten. It's "CookWise".

To go back to the original topic a bit, I had a bracket pop off pretty soon after, too. It's not that unusual, I think...sometimes the bonding stuff just doesn't set right or something like that.

Back on topic, one of my ceramics popped off after my first adjustment. It happened in a v smart restaurant but right after someone had broken a glass at the table. It had swivelled round and I felt this thing in my mouth and thought I'd eaten some of the glass at first! As it was a work related dinner I had a few of those anxious moments when you have no choice but to keep smiling! Luckily my ortho is only a few minutes away so it was sorted the next day.

Having had some orthodontic treatment when I was younger, I was amazed at how little discomfort I had when my braces went in - I'd stocked up on wax, pain killers and soup to be ready! However, I have found a bit of discomfort - wouldn't exactly call it pain - at each adjustment. A small tip - never say 'no pain, no gain' to your orthondontist in case they take you at your word!

I also thought the wires looked a 'bit thin' and always think I should go up a thickness at each appointment but that isn't the way it works. The engineering behind it all is really complicated and isn't just to do with your wire thickness. I thought my ortho must have put me on 'nursery' wire the first time, but by the end of only a few weeks I could feel that my teeth had moved.

Give it a week or two, and if you're like me, you'll be able to tell that something is happening! Honestly, you're teeth are moving even as you read this!

Yes! Usually if a bracket comes loose of falls off within 24 hours of brace day, it's usually because the bonding has failed. :D

Thanks for that peartree, hehe I dont know much about cook books, wasnt really following that conversation! Yeah it was a bit strange having this bracket hanging there like that. And after it got stuck back on I asked him "what if it happens again when I'm out of town" (thought maybe I could go to another ortho or something and get them to fix it) and he said to just leave it (coz I'm going back at the end of this week). It'd be good if there was some way of just pulling it off the wire, but no you just have to leave it there! I guess the thicker wire was too much for that tooth? I personally couldnt feel a difference in tightness between that one and the one I have now. The tooth that it came off is sore now, am not sure if its just that its the one thats going to be hardest to move or if theres something stuck in there (feels like there is but have been brushing/flossing it all the time and nothings coming out). Anyway, I'm doing ok. Last night I ate pork (but not crackling) chewing on the left and it was fine. Thought that was cool, hehe the things that make you happy when you have braces!
