Veneers - Brackete Probs

#1 Post by jlaur122 »

I just got my braces on FRIDAY...it's not SUNDAy and i've popped off a bracket! This is my 2nd time in braces. I had them first when i was 14 and now just doing some maintenance to slighlty move my teeth so I can get veneers to close up my space. my question is this....all i have eaten since i got the braces on is oatmeal and eggs, i do not "pick" at them or anything. I am totally anal about brushing and flossing. What did i do wrong? GRR!!!
The tooth it popped out of has a composite veneer on it already. I have a crown on one of my molars and the ortho tech had to put some other type of special glue on that bracket to ensure that it would stick. She said that brackets tend to pop off easier on porcelain teeth. But why would they have done the same for my front veneers? I just hope this isn't an ongoing thing. I have NEVEr lost a bracket w/ my HS braces. And now I am even more careful and obsessive. Has anyone has similar probs? I hope it's just a one time deal! Thanks1

I also had the same problem with my veneers. Within half an hour of being braced, I heard a couple of pops and the brackets had snapped off my teeth. They were re-attached a couple of days later, only to pop off again... And again! Finally my ortho used some sort of industrial strength etching liquid and hey presto, they've stayed stuck since.
However, my new concern is - will they come off easily on debracing day?! (the brackets, not my veneers...)

The "glue" that is used for bonding brackets have very poor shear strength. In english, force concentrated to stretch the "glue" will cause it to break. You are only as strong as your weak link. The pliers used for removal generate force in this direction and off they come. Think about why you have to be careful biting into corn on the cob or apples or eating taffy/caramel while in braces and how your teeth and bite react.

To the OP, if it keeps happening and you plan to get proper veneers post treatment then your ortho may just roughen the surface of your veneers where they will place the bracket. It will not be ideal for post tx, but if you are planning on getting veneers anyway then there is no problem.

Best,
Rory

Hi,

My front three teeth are porcelain crowns. My ortho told me they would need to be replaced after treatment due to the teeth being pulled down and the tops of the crowns being exposed. I guess this is why he just filed the surface of each one prior to fitting the bracket. I have had no problems with them coming off so far (touch wood!!) but I guess they will look a bit crap when the brace comes off prior to being replaced.
