Powerchain chipped my tooth?

#1 Post by wirerose »

I have had a powerchain for the past month. I just noticed that I now have a chip on the corner of one of the two front top teeth. I am so devastated!

Is it possible that the powerchain is pulling my teeth together too strongly and that this might be causing my tooth to chip?

I haven't banged my face on anything significant to have caused this...I think I would have noticed.

I just want to cry. = ( After working so hard to get them straight are they all going to chip away before I get my straight smile???

Sorry about your chipped tooth :( I can't imagine that a powerchain could do that though.

Even quite a small force can chip a tooth if it's applied in the wrong direction. I once chipped a flake off one of my front teeth by eating a jam sandwich. There were raspberry seeds in the jam and somehow one of them caused this chip as I bit down.

Maybe give your ortho or dentist a call to see if there's anything you should do about it now. You'll be able to get a bit of bonding put on after treatment to improve the look of that tooth.

Good luck!

Thank you Karen and Lisa for your responses. I have been examining my bite and I can see that the little corner that chipped off is exactly in line with one of my lower brackets. I think this is what did the deed.

I had a completely closed bite, so they didnt' even put my brackets on the lowers for 3 months after my uppers went on. Then they put these horrid cement bumps on two of my upper teeth to keep me from biting my brackets off. Twice I ground or bit these horrid little bumps off, until they decided that my teeth weren't hitting my brackets and didn't put them back on.

I was secretly so happy because I couldn't eat ANYTHING with those bumps on my teeth. But even then, I knew that I could feel my teeth hit the brackets every now and then, not even every day, just sometimes.

Now I realize that the grinding I do in my sleep that was chomping those little bumps off, is probably what ground into the lower bracket to chip my tooth. = (

I did research a little last night and found out about the bonding. This made me feel a lot better about the whole thing.

Thank you both for taking the time to write your supportive and caring words. I REALLY appreciate it. = ) Let my experience be a testament that biting your brackets off is not the worst thing that could happen, so anyone who has those cement bumps should be happy for them, I know I would be happier with them now instead of this chipped tooth!

Thank you Meryaten, for sharing. Yes I wanted to be sure I posted the cause of the chip to hopefully prevent others from making the same misassumption about the bumpers (as my ortho calls them).

It never even occured to me that I could chip a tooth on my brackets. My ortho never said that the bumpers were for anything more than to protect the brackets from being popped off, and I never imagined it could chip away at my tooth instead. I thought "Oh, I will be careful." And I hated those bumpers more than anything--I couldn't eat anything so I was secretly pleased when they fell out. Now I see this chip could have been completely prevented if I would have just asked them to put the bumper back on.
