how often is your adjustmemt visit?

#1 Post by adultbraces »

My ortho who's registered as an ASO and lectures in UCLA and so sorf.. She's very busy and alot of patents wants to see me every 4 - 7 weeks once my brackets and wires are done. That seems like awfully long time.
What is actually going on between visits?
Is there any adjustment do you do yourself at home b/t visits?

How often do you go see your ortho?

* treating for minimal overbite /overjet and minor crowdness
4 premolar extraction
smart clip metal braces
treatment 20-24 month*

My visits are every six weeks, which I believe is the average. Moving teeth is a slow process, and so they are slowly shifting between visits. You shouldn't have to do anything in between visits, unless specifically instructed to by your ortho.

Good luck!

I try to go on the short side of every four weeks. Preferrably less.

Generally my ortho tells me to make appointments for 6-week intervals, Once in a while he's had me come in sooner if there's something he needs to do. Some of his patients come less frequently. When I was in reception last week I heard him tell somebody to make an appointment for 10 weeks.

The wires are constantly working to move the teeth so plenty will be happening in between adjustments without you needing to do anything at home to help the process.

usually every 4-6 weeks as they are at my office every other week, hence the variation; i've had visits twice in a month such as this past Oct. next visit is jan. 8 or 11 which is 6 weeks away from the last one.
i dont do any adjustments between visits myself.

Wires work by it self?
I'd think adjustment are done at the visit for rest of another 4 weeks, that's gotta be hurt.. Does the pain wear out?

Yes, the wires work by themselves. They are made of a special alloy and are popularly known as "memory wires". When the wire is bent out of shape to go through your brackets, it "wants" to go back to its original shape. The resulting force works constantly to move the teeth. The days of painful monthly tightenings are long gone. The wires used today exert constant light forces on the teeth.

You might find it helpful to read through the "braces for newbies" section here. viewtopic.php?t=11430

i asked my ortho about this when i first started going as i wanted it to happen as quickly as possible... said that the movement seemed to happen within a week or two, why can't i just keep coming in?!

she explained about the movement of the teeth - how the roots shift and squash one side and have to be built up again on the other etc, and, apparently 6 weeks is an average, but 4 is a minimum - i've had mine done fairly regularly at 5 week intervals (which is handy if i've had to postpone appts due to illness, i feel as if i've not got 'wasted' weeks!)

I go every 4 weeks. But since I might be moving and left my orthodontist because he was so mean (long story) I haven't gone in 5 weeks! It's good and bad.

I go every 3-4 weeks as they tell me to schedule. My friend is going every 6 weeks. I have clear braces and she has the traditional stainless steel ones with rubber ligs. My ligs are changed out in the office at every visit and my wire sizes have remained the same for most of my treatment. As of two months ago, my ortho started working on correcting my midline and closing the remaining spaces from my premolar extractions (which are almost closed.) My friend did not have any extractions except for her wisdom teeth which created crowding after her first round of ortho.
Upper and lower 1st premolars extracted
Uppers braced 4/6/07 & Lowers braced 4/20/07
ceramic brackets and rectangular arch wires
Est. term: 30-36 months
De-banded: 3/04/09 w/ LBR and U&L Essix

I used to go for adjustments every 3 weeks, now I think I'm gonna go every 10 days, as my ortho told me she wanted to try to rush the movement for the left canine, which is pretty badly positioned. :?

Hi
My ortho puts down 6-8 weeks and when i book it at the reception, most of the time i get 6. Ive only had it at 7 if hes at a meeting or away or something at the 6th week. Of course you do get exeptions when you need to go a week apart for something, like impressions.

My ortho said 6 weeks but I got the first one scheduled at 5 because of the Christmas holiday. If they try to schedule me for 6 weeks again I'll say I'm busy that week and try to get in at 5. I plan on doing this for the whole treatment. At least until they catch on. I should be able to shave a couple of months off the treatment with this plan, right?
