"spacer bars" inside mouth to expedite process?

#1 Post by calyanne »

hi all. i just got braces 5 weeks ago and my dentist uses a process in which he puts bars (or spacers) on the upper and lower insides of my mouth to quicken the ortho process. he said that these are kinda used like counter braces so he can put thickier/stronger wires on the braces to move the teeth quicker (this process is only used with metal braces though :(, no ceramics for me). i don't know if there is a technical word for this process or not. but im wondering if anyone else has this, or is this his own little thing. my teeth are almost straight already and he says most people are in the braces a max of a year- which i am totally digging since this is my second time with braces (im 29, had em as a teenager too). the one thing i have problems with is speech! with the inner wires (which are close to the gum line, but not quite there) crowding my tongue i slur a lot of words and have a had time talking. also i get mouth fatigue after talking for a while. please please please tell me there is someone else out there that has these and can help me with info on how to deal! thanks a ton. (BTW my ortho is in the minneapolis, mn area)

Hi,

I remember a member having these (scroll down a bit) :

I'm not sure though if those bars you have are the same, but I think so. Like so
many other appliances, there is a time they can be very annoying, then you get
used to them and later on, you hardly know they are there anymore. I am sure
within some days/weeks, things will go better a lot. Good luck !
