Good-bye Nance!

#1 Post by cowlypso »

Well, after almost a year, I'm parting with my beloved Nance. So sad.

Gosh, it's been forever since I've posted. Right now we've been working on closing extraction gaps. The gaps in the lower arch are almost closed. I've got about 1mm on the right and 2 on the left. It's hard to believe that teeth once fit in there! On the top, we couldn't pull back all the front teeth at once because it was squishing my palate against the Nance. So he decided to just move the canines back first. The canines are just about there. The right one is all the way back, and the left one has about 1 mm to go. I saw the dentist yesterday, and they were concerned about irritation of the tissue under the Nance. So the ortho agreed that it can go!

In 3 weeks, I'm going in to get the Nance taken out, which means that I'll also be getting new molar bands, because it's welded to my current ones. Just for fun, I'll be getting a TPA in place of the Nance, but that will be a lot smaller (the ortho called it a g-bar, but as far as I can tell, it's just a TPA). Then we can start moving those incisors backwards.

Oh, and the wonderful man also gave me a lovely parting gift at yesterday's appointment. He looked my arches over and decided that the upper arch should have a little more curve to it. So he pulled out my archwire and bent it a bit. He might as well have just punched me in the mouth...

So, has anybody had a Nance and then had it removed? He said that I can expect the skin on the palate where it's been sitting to be "a bit tender" so I'm wondering exactly how bad it is and how long it lasts. I'm getting it out on a Tuesday, and I have to lecture again on Thursday. Any advice from somebody who's done this would be appreciated.

That's great! I assume you are rid of the headgear, too? I had my nance out temporarily and for a few days the skin felt kind of "tickly" - I don't know how to describe it, but it soon passed.

I'm sure that after a Nance, a TPA will be a piece of cake. Hope your achy mouth soon feels better.

I had no problems when my nance plate was removed. The ortho just said be careful with pizza, hot coffee, etc for a few days as the area would burn easier.

I didn't need new molar bands. He just sawed off the nance and all was well. Perhaps your new appliance is also attached to molar bands????

Enjoy!

From what I've seen, the TPA needs some sort of special molar bands to be anchored to. So that's why I get new bands. Which is good, because I've had a gap in one of my bands since I got my braces, and I've been really paranoid about getting a cavity there. Maybe I'll have him x-ray that tooth while the band is off.

The teeth are feeling better today. But that's no reason to not have ice cream, right?

Sadly, the headgear is still coming to bed with me every night. I swear it's interfering with my sleep quality. I had a bad cold so I skipped out on it for a week, and I slept better that week with a cold than I had been with the headgear. Oh well. Maybe he'll surprise me and say I don't have to wear it anymore after this. Even if I still have to, it'll be gone once we move the front teeth back.

I'm just hoping that this switch-up doesn't majorly mess up my ability to speak. Maybe I'll have a video ready that week just in case...

Yes Cowlypso I had a nance appliance at one time. My palate was just a little tender in one spot where the nance was starting to get too tight. They suggested gargling with 50% diluted hydrogen peroxide to heal it faster..it did wonders practically overnight! Congrats on getting yours off, you'll love having it off your palate!
