Strange experiance at consult today

Ok so I have been to like 6 consults or something, (lost count) just trying to get my treatment done my way for the best deal. I am a 25 y/o male.

Well the place I went to today has been strange from the moment I first tried calling. They didn't answer the phone after several attemps so finally I left a message. They finally called back days later so I scheduled the consult.

When I get in there they sit me in front of this little tv and make me watch a 70's movie on gum desease. Then the doc comes in and starts poking around in my mouth to see if I bleed. He says it looks like some of my molars might have gum desease. Then he has an assistant come in and do the same thing, when she did it it hurt like a mother! Out of all the consults I have had with good reputible orthos, none have ever went to this extent or had mentioned my gums would be a problem. Some had poke around a little but not like this place. I am wondering if this place was just really trying to hustle me on this. There was a weird vibe to this place and it just kind of seemed like they were hustlers. The doc said I would need surgery for the gums and my total with braces would be about $9,800. I am uninsured and can't afford a price like that. Now I am confused about what I should do to get things done right.

Do you guys think he was just trying to cash in on me? I am only 25 and from what I have heard gum disease usually won't usually start this early. Like I said, none of the other orthos ever mentioned the gum problem. Opinions appreciated.

Wow, you've had 6 consults. You must be in the States where consults are free, you'd be quite a bit out of pocket by now here in the UK.

I'd say trust your gut instinct and run away from there. Check with your dentist whether he/she thinks you have a gum problem, however if none of the others mentioned it then it does indeed sound like a very strange practice that you visited. Also remember that if you had a problem with your brace you would want it sorted straight away and not have to wait for days for them to get back to you.

Hope you find an ortho that you like.

Regards
Joney

I'm really trying to hold back on this one, but....

...they sound mental!

I'm with Joney on this one - here's to running away and finding an ortho you like and, more importantly, that you're able to respect! Hope you're successful and your gums are given a clean bill of health ;-)

I agree, Run!!
That place sounds super shady. Head for the hills and find someone you feel comfortable with.

Haha! Thanks for the replies. Thats also what I was worried about was if there was a problem, that place was almost impossible to get ahold of. Plus all the people that worked there did not seem very happy. It was just very strange compared to my ortho consults. F that place! Did anybody else have bad expiriances like this or are places like this generally uncommon?

If you google Neal Murphy DDS you can see this guy. Click on the 2nd result. He claims he can move teeth 200-300 % faster. The thing is he said I would be in braces for 4 1/2 years and the other orthos said about 12-18 months!

Hihi, this is funny in a certain way. I am sure if you look at these people very
hard you will reveal the absolute truth : they are not human. They landed here
in the seventies, hence the video they still use. You are very lucky you can still
tell us that, you got out of there alive. But the bad news for you is that a more
"normal" ortho will need 9 to 13 years to get your teeth right ... according to
them. Oh dear. More bad news, they possibly infected you when poking around.
You shall be one of them very soon. They are spreading slowly but surely ...

I'm just wondering why he's trying to charge you twice the average cost of braces, since he wouldn't be doing the surgery in his office and that wouldn't be included in that price... or would it?

Why would the ortho also do periodontal work in his office?

weird. Find another ortho.
