It's Fixed!! No Longer Biting Lower Brackets!!

#1 Post by ilovemacs »

Hello!! I just got my lower brackets on Wednesday, January 23. At the ortho's I was biting my lower left central with my upper left central. The ortho told the assistant to do a molar build up. She did. I think she shaved down too much of the cement because I'm still biting the bracket. On Thursday my mom called the ortho for me and explained the situation (I wrote the terms and what's wrong on a sheet of paper), they said they can't do anything about it because my ortho is away for one week since around finals it's not very busy. Well yesterday (Thurs.) and today (Friday) the upper left and right centrals are now both biting the upper and lower centrals!! Now the right teeth (upper and lower right centrals are involved- they weren't before. Sorry for the rant- I had to vent! I'm used to the molar build up but it's not doing the trick. The thing that most upsets me is that I can't bite down fully because if I did I'd brake two (2) brackets off! I thought molar build ups were suppose to prevent that!! Thanks!! I'd like to know of appliances and other techniques that prevent biting lower brackets. I know I'm biting at least two lower brackets there could be more I don't know!
The appliances and techniques I know of so far are:
- molar build ups
- bite turbos (my ortho's daughter has 'em)
- bite plate (?)

What a pain it's happening while your ortho is away. I guess all you can do in the meantime is be very careful and get in to see him as soon as he gets back.

He might make the molar buildup bigger and put one on the other side too, to help open up your bite.

Hope you manage to keep your brackets in place until next week.

Here's pics for anyone who wants to see: (just remember the pics are backwards. The blue ligatured upper central is my right upper central.

I had that exact situation many months ago. All they did was put little bumpers on the bottom front two teeth..they went on just like the ligs do around the bracket but had a padded bumper on the top of them..they kept me from biting my bottom brackets. Maybe this is an option for you?

AHHHH! That's no good! :(
Questions:
What is molar build up?
I've never had that happen to me, thankfully. I did get both arches braced on the same day. Hopefully it gets better soon! :D

It is when the ortho put cement in the top of the tooth in the groove of the tooth (where the teeth fit together) and puts as much cement as needed. It's basically a platform for the tooth to sit on so the bite doesn't close completely therefore prevents biting the brackets. I think mine isn't built up enough or maybe I should have a second one (I only have one) or maybe they should use a different technique. I don't know. I'm going to call them when he gets back.

I agree there!! The cement for the build up only fills the groove of my teeth and that it, it doesn't "overflow" like any other people pics I've seen. Is that normal. Meryaten do you have pics of your molar build ups? The cement they used was clear so I can't get a picture.

Thanks everyone! Keep the replies coming!!

That helps enough though Meryaten so I can at least see that yours "overflowed" over your tooth "groove". Mine doesn't. Also the odd thing is I only have one. I'm not sure if I'm biting my lower right and left centrals anymore and now I think I may be biting the buccal tube with a humongous hook (I'll have to get a picture someday!) Thanks again!!!

EDIT!!- I defiantly am still biting my left and right lower centrals and I think my lower left 1st molar is now involved! :?

I'll survive!! LOL!!

Hey there!

I have build-ups, and even with them, my teeth *almost* hit my front brackets. I haven't knocked them off yet, *knock on wood*, though the ortho's assistant was worried about that.

I do have a picture! Hope this helps.

Thanks for the pic phae!! It really helps! My build up [I only have one (how odd? :?)] doesn't even come close to looking like that!! Mine is clear and doesn't "overflow" like yours. I think mine needs to be built up higher and I think I need another one. That's just my opinion though and I'm no pro! LOL! Thanks for the help everyone!! :D

just be careful because biting the brackets can cause damage to your front teeth and possibly crack them!! :(

i mean that when you bite down you may cause damage to your front teeth not the brackets if they are hitting - who cares about the brackets its your teeth you should be concerned about you know

Today at 2:30 pm EST I got my molar build up redone! They also added a second one! It's so much better!

Sorry the first before pic won't resize for some reason!

Here are some pics of before and after:

After:

In the after pics you can see that it really helps! I'm smiling normally- the gaps between my top and bottoms arches are real and they're annoying.

I'm getting used to them quickly! I should add the "cement" is clear again like last time.

I can post more pics if anyone wants!

I'm glad it's fixed now! :D
