How old is too old to get braces?

#1 Post by TEXLADY »

I realize you can get braces at ANY age, so I guess what I am asking is if there is a certain age at which getting braces you would run a greater risk of needed gum sugery, etc. after you finish the orthodontic treatment? Perhaps that is something that varies depending upon each individual at any age but just wondering if braces beyond a certain age are more of a risk for other issues after treatment. Anyone have any ideas or knowledge on this?

To my knowledge, there is no "age limit" on when you can get braces. Age is a very subjective thing, and fortunately orthodontists prefer to use the criteria of having good gums, roots of teeth look good, etc rather than a person's age. Some people who are younger may have worse gums, etc. than an older person too, as I am sure that it has a lot to do with how well a person cares for their teeth, etc. Anyone with better information on this matter, feel free to elaborate....

Hope I have helped in some way!

I don't know the answer, but my ortho told me his oldest patient is 67yrs and one of my clients who is 69yrs has just had braces fitted. I guess you are never too old for some things!

As long as your gums and teeth are healthy and you don't have any other major health issues, there is no age limit for braces.
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

One of the ortho's assistants told me they have a patient who is 74. Never too late to fix problems!

I don't it matters as long as your ortho or dentist says your teeth/gums are healthy! It's never to late to make your smile all it can be. There is a 60+ year old lawyer at the prosecutor's office I work at and she has braces. :D
4 Wisdom teeth extracted
4 First bicuspids extracted
1 Trans-palatal arch
4 springs
Silver ligatures
Damon brackets
And a partidge in a pear tree!

I am 48, and I have them on for a second time (the first was when I was 24). I have them on again due to gum work back in my late 30's (the shifted a bit) and then falling on my face about a year and a half ago and I seemed to have loosened them and they shifted a little bit more.

My mom got Invisaligns at 65. She has all of her teeth (she is 71 now) and so does my dad at 72. I figured that as long as I take care of my teeth the teeth genes have shown that I will have them that long. They might as well be straight.
