Elastics?

Hi. I have a couple of questions about elastics. I just received my first a week ago. He almost put me in a 'triangle' on one side but decided againt it. I'm now using "Rams" and have one on each side, each going from a lower premolar to an upper canine. Is this typical? And what exactly is a 'triangle'...as in, what teeth are involved? Also, how long do you usually wear elastics?

I've come to rely on my elastica. They keep ya
in line. :D
After awhile in them you'll understand they are good.

I've had them for 6 days now...I'm using the Rams. My jaw is sooo sore and my bite feels incredibly weird. Does this get better? About how long before you no longer notice them? So far, this is definitely my worst experience with having braces. lol I'm just praying that I won't have to continue wearing them until I have my braces off.
