Sudden sensitivity to cold

#1 Post by TucsonDeb »

Last week I had my lower wire changed and my basic lig change. Since then I've noticed my teeth (top & bottom) are incredibly sensitive to cold. Even a cold breeze will make them ache. Has anyone else experienced this? Will it go away?

Yup. It seems to go away within a few days of an adjustment. I try to stay away from drinking icy cold water since there are times when cold water can just about knock me over with the pain.

I see you are in sunny Tucson - try an arctic winter wind on a cold morning, that'll wake your teeth right up!

My molars were really sensitive, I was convinced it was a cavity because it was so bad. I switched toothpastes to a sensitive formula and things have been good. I had gone to the dentist to have it checked out but he assured me after some tapping and close inspection of teeth that it was just sensitivity from teeth moving around.

Good to know - thanks. I'll pick up some sensitve-teeth toothpaste and hope it goes away soon. It's been about a week so far. Very annoying.

I've had this too a few times, lasting up to a week each time. I've seen quite a few other posts about it too and the consensus from them (and confirmed by my ortho) is that it's totally normal. He explained it to me like this: as the teeth move, sometimes they'll move a bit quickly in one direction and the nerve that goes up inside the tooth can't grow quickly enough to keep up and so gets stretched - this is what causes this pain.
It's annoying I know but please don't worry it's anything more serious. I hope everything else in your braces experience is going great - enjoy and be proud!

it usually goes away. I think it's because our teeth are already being pulled and pushed so the little extra bit just makes them sensitive until they can settle in again.
