Upper front teeth hitting lower brackets

#1 Post by Joanna20 »

Hello to all of you!
I've been braced for almost 2 years and never really had to approach my orthodontist regarding something so serious. Last Wednesday I went in to get my usual adjustment, she put a power chain on my upper teeth in the hopes of closing my upper gaps (left from pre-molar extractions). The thing is my upper incisors and now hitting my lower brackets and when this happens my molars in the back don't meet, which means I can't chew anything. This started on Friday as upper teeth moved backwards...
I never had to approach my orthodontist on something so serious; I have no idea how she's going to react really. I'm scared she might think it's something not so serious, because once I went there (like on a Emergency Appointment) when my power chain broke and she made me feel as if I was wasting her time and mine. But this time it's something more serious... I can't close my mouth properly and when I try the lower brackets hit the upper teeth and push them forwards, my jaw really hurts 'cause I haven't closed it properly in days. I've been walking around with toilet paper in the back on my mouth to keep it from closing...
I'm actually pretty mad that she didn't see this coming... And I don't see how she's going to fix this... except if she removes my lower brackets...
My lower teeth are probably ready but I'm not sure if they should settle down a little bit more.
She needs to fix tomorrow because I can't eat and live normally...
I've called the office today and told me to go there tomorrow between 8 and 12.
I'm really nervous... Any suggestions to how I should approach her?
Anyone been through this?

This is how my front teeth look like at the moment:

Hi Joanna,

I go for my lower braces tomorrow and I have a very deep bite. I'm getting either turbos or molar builds to prevent my top teeth from hitting my lower brackets. Unfortunately with either of these things, my back teeth will not touch but it'll save my teeth from getting chipped or knocking a bracket off. You could ask your ortho about them.

Good luck...let us know how you get along!! :D
Keep smilin'! :)

tell her you are concerned about knocking off a bracket, breaking a wire, or chipping a tooth while you use your mouth. keep it factual & simple. don't go into any mental anguish if she is unsympathetic. (AW forums are for the anguish!! :) )

you are paying her money for your care, so you should not feel you are wasting her time. she is doing what you are paying her to do. don't say that, but that is the truth & your demeanor should reflect that. you CAN say you want to protect her efforts to improve your teeth and you don't want to damage anything.

good luck!

My teeth did this when i first got braces... they just put a little gob of blue stuff there (a turbo) so your teeth dont hit your braces. When your fixed they just sand off the gob of blue gue :P

You're doing the right thing. I would go in as well. You know when something isn't quite right.
They may build up a couple molars with a blue bonding material to open your bit a bit so you don't have this provlem. I've had the material on for a year and a half to keep me open. Yes, your eatting will be a bit weird for a while but it's ok. It will keep you safe from chipping, breaking off brackets.
You will feel much better. You may not even need this, they may do something real easy to cure what ales you.
You'll be fine, it's just good you're going in.
I pretty much stopped worrying what theses professionals think. I'm paying them and I know they want me to tell them whrn something isn't correct. It helps them really.

I have a crossbite and I had a similar problem with some of my back teeth. They just put little "bumpers" or something like that on the molars so I couldn't eat my brackets for lunch. As soon as my teeth moved enough, they were sanded off by just calling in and telling them something wasn't right -- so they saw me a day or two later, no big deal.

This is fairly common and the little things on the teeth will feel weird, but should help you bite/ chew better until you no longer need them. When you don't need them anymore, YOU WILL KNOW because your bite will get all off again and they can simply be removed.
