Random cuts?

#1 Post by Malzee »

So the first couple weeks with my braces was pure torture I had tons of cankers, etc and it was horrible. That's calmed down and I was finally used to them when I thought I was getting another canker, in my lower lip, but after a few days and nothing really helping it, I looked in the mirror and discovered it was a cut (or indent really) that spread the length of my lip in the shape of my braces!

I didnt have this for like the first month then all of a sudden it appears. It will heal up for a couple days then come back. I try to use wax when I got to bed and rinse with salt water til it heals, but it always comes back. Am I going to keep doing all of that the entire time I have my braces? It's so annoying. It doesn't hurt too too bad, but it's definitely irritating and I don't want to get too bad cause it could be a source of infection (which I'm prone to...)

Has anybody else had this issue? What do you do about it?

Make sure you're staying hydrated. I had times when my braces indented into my lip and I had to peel my lip free.

Keep doing what you're doing and drink plenty of water and other liquids. Maybe even a hydrating mouthwash.

It will get better! It may take a little time, but we all get over the mouth sores phase at some point or another. :)

Are you female? I only ask because I notice that at certain "times of the month" when my body is retaining water, it's like all the moisture from my mouth is sucked dry and I have the same problem you're describing. But the next week things seem to go back to normal.

Ive also noticed the same thing, at certain times in the month im more prone to ulcers and sore cheeks

guess some peoples mouths, adapt more quicky than others, ive been prone to this right from the beginning. The best hing to do, really is to remain hydrated.

I had this and if I didn't stay on top of it it would always come back. The others have already given great advice - stay hydrated, salt water rinses, put wax on those brackets when you start to feel it coming on and you'll be fine. When it was bad I got by with waxing up my front lower brackets at night so my lip wouldn't stick and that helped the most. During the day it wasn't as bad.

Have you checked there are no stray wires. When i had irritation,I just thought here goes, better get used to it, but on closer inspection, by tucking in the end of my wire ties (that had suddenly started sticking it out), I minimised the cutting up of my cheeks.
