I am so sore!!

#1 Post by jfcortez83 »

I just got my braces last Thursday and pain is subsiding but I keep biting inside of cheek with my back right molar bands :( They are very pokey and sharp  I have to use lots of Kanka ointment which is benzocaine to ease the pain. Dr. told me he couldn't push molar bands all the way down on that side because of my bite but that it will get better with time. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks in advance

Wax wax wax and wax some more. The metal bits sticking out of the molar band into the cheeks chafe like crazy and I cover the entire thing in wax, all four molar bands. One ball of wax the size of my pinky nail to smoosh over each. 24/7 and replaced every time it came off. About 4 weeks in, I tried without and found that yea, I could manage. Six weeks now and there are days I can live happily without wax and others where I find I still need wax to make my day go smoother.

RENE:

Do you recommend a specific kind or brand of wax? I am using the one the dr gave me but it doesn't stay put. Yesterday when I was brushing I found some wax under the wire of my two bottom front teeth  It traveled a long way!

I was kind of curious if there are different waxes and if some work better than others also.

Poor you! Rubbing is miserable isn't it! I've not found any difference between brands of wax. I did find the silicone type different. It is clear, and so great for use in the front of the mouth in terms of low visibility, I didn't find it so good for very sore areas. Have you you tried drying the area with a tissue? That would help the wax stick - not easy at the back of your mouth, but might be worth a try.

Also in the UK we can get a product called difflam which is a mouth wash that reduced inflamation. The active ingredient is benzydamine.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon

try warming the wax between your fingers before you apply it. Apply it and then push on your cheek (fingers on outside of mouth) over the waxed area. This seems to give it a good seal to the spot.

Also be sure you use a lot of it. My daughter's ortho gave her sme wax that didn't stay as well as the kind we bought in the little packages at the drugstore or WalMart.

Don't know the brand we got, but Gum makes some.

Thanks everyone :D I puts LOTS of wax to top and bottom molar bands and that has helped alot. When it starts to move I simply put it back in place with my tongue or with finger. It feels sssooo much better when I bite my cheek with wax and not pokey molar bands!!
I am feeling so much better  Thanks everyone!

That's great to hear :)

My ortho gave me normal dental wax, the white coloured one. It wouldn't stick properly unless the metal was dry but I learnt to just smoosh a huge blob of wax on it then use a saliva covered finger to pat it down in place :P

I recently received some silicone wax from Dentakit (I ordered the Brace Relief Pocket Kit and extra refills) and I really prefer the silicone wax. It's clear and bouncy/springy! It feels better on the inner cleats of the molar bands, against my tongue. Otherwise, it works the same way... even smells the same way after a while
