sensitive teeth with new braces
Hey everyone,
This is my first post on this site. I got my braces on yesterday and have noticed that a few teeth (one on the top and one on the bottom) were very sensitive when I was brushing ( I use a Sonicare). It was different than the usual new braces on soreness. It felt like I had hit a nerve when I was brushing those two areas. It was a very sharp sudden pain.
I'm wondering if this is something common with new braces. I had my last teeth cleaning in January and got a full periodontist check up last September and everything was fine then. I had 3 grafts due to gum recession but that wasn't in the same area that I'm having the soreness.
I dont know if I should make an appt with my dentist to have the tooth looked at or wait a few days and see if the pain goes away.

Sabrina,
So was your pain like a sharp nerve pain? My teeth are sensitive to cold water and cold air sometimes and it is a similar pain to that. I'm not sure if that is something out of the ordinary or part of the pain associated with putting braces on. It's a little different than the ordinary pain you get your adjusments. (This is my 3rd time in braces so I'm familiar with that pain, but this is something different)

Hi Sara, and welcome!
I had that exact sharp sensitive nerve pain in my front teeth when I first got braced and used my Sonicare. I switched to a normal toothbrush and brushed gently until my teeth weren't so sore. In about a week I went back to the Sonicare and it was fine. I had my first adjustment yesterday and the pain with the Sonicare is back so I'd think it has to do with that initial pressure on your teeth. I haven't had any gum grafting though, so I'd say if you are really concerned about it and don't want to risk waiting it out, give your dental or ortho office a call and see what they say, just in case. You can never be too careful. Good luck!

Similar thing happened to me. I went to my dentist and he told me it was just some normal sensitivity which can happen during ortho tx. He told me to brush gently with sensitive toothpaste and use a fluoride rinse. So far, no more senstivity and I'm back to using my Sonicare at the regular setting.

use sensodyne and a normal toothbrush for a couple days and see if it helps, if it doesnt go see your dentist
i was havin some sharp pain on one incisor right before i got braced, the dentist thinks at some point i may need a root canal on that tooth since the pain was only on the front of the tooth
the pain more or less went away, since in braces it hurts sometimes but i try to be gentle when im brushing

Thanks everyone for the feedback
I actually ended up calling my orthodontists office and they told me to use sensodyne toothpast for the sensitivity and that it should be resolved in a week or so. They said it happens sometimes after braces are put on. I think I'll also lay off the sonicare for a little while longer. It was a little uncomfortable using it. It kind of felt like a jackhammer on my teeth!

I have severe sensitivity with my braces... even to the point where I thought I had an abscess and had an emergency appointment with my dentist --- only to find out it was sensitivity due to my braces. I have been in braces almost 6months and my sensitivity has gotten WORSE!
At my cleanings, they give me a special treatment. I also know I can use sensitive toothpaste and such.
For me, the best thing that works is to avoid the things that make my teeth hurt worse: cold liquids, hot liquids, sucking on my teeth, getting too much air in my mouth, consciously not clenching, etc...

Nope, same thing happened to me!
The same thing happened to me the first couple of days in braces. The sensitivity went away and then came back to two other teeth. I just now started using sesodyne toothpaste and I hope it will help. I think that teeth sensitivity is normal!
