Hi all! I just wanted to post a quick hello. I finally registered after lurking for a few days. I want to tell you all that you have helped me to go from sheer panic at being told I will need braces and possibly surgery to feeling pretty much okay with the whole idea!
I turn 40 in a month and will most likely begin my 40th year with a metal mouth. Since I am not a huge fan of plain old dental visits - though I do keep them regularly, I dread them and cringe through the whole process- you can imagine the terror that the word "orthodontist" struck in my heart!
I was referred to a nearby ortho and managed to call their office to make my consultation appointment without coming unglued. I was weighing the pros and cons of actually keeping the appointment when I found this site. I have read so many postings that have helped me to realize that I am lucky to be in a position to put myself in braces and to hopefully avoid the dreaded surgery at the end of the road. I am now actually starting to look forward to my appointment, and knowing that there are so many options out there now and so many adults in braces has made me feel less of an outcast, and more of a happy group!

welcome to AW ... its great to be able to come on here and ask for advice, have a moan, share good times and bad ....... and know that we all know what its like to be all braced up as an adult !

I think the thinking about it beforehand is almost the worst part..... fear of the unknown . Soon you will be an "old pro" at it

I have just had my second adjustment .... and my first spacers ........ and none of it so far has made me wish I had not started the journey


I must admit that as a along term nervous dental patient ....... the ortho seems to me a much more "positive" thin as we are doing something really positive at each visit ..... so any discomfort I can relate to what its achieving !

I have found so much support here, it's been great! My hubby is trying to be supportive, but he's really squeamish and can't stand to hear about the details of my ordeal. I also found this site to be a hugely positive support system and I've really gotten a much more excited & positive view of my treatment. I hope you continue to find it an inspiration and feel more like a member of your new metalmouth family

I'm 45 and 5 month braced.

Last adjustment my ortho asked how I felt about my braces, "any regrets?" - my reply was "yes - that I didn't do it much sooner".

I agree entirely with the sentiments that the worst part is the anticipation. I am aware of my braces in a good way as they are making things better and though I'm only part way through, my teeth are already way better than they were. My braces are my friends.
