Extractions, [ALL FINISHED!!]

#1 Post by Memran »

Fear, panic, doubt. Am I doing the right thing? Am I sure?
I'm such a mess right now.. :(

I hate my wonkey teeth but this is the part I've been dreading since I was first told it was necessary, and I've got all day to worry, panic and think about it!

Yes you are doing the right thing! I had 2 upper premolars extracted. I nearly fainted just walking into the surgery. I won't lie, I didn't enjoy it, but I will stress this- IT WILL NOT HURT!!
I worked myself up into a panic, was near hysterical getting it done, and then afterwards I was fine! I had no pain whatsoever, and the only way it affected me afterwards was that my mouth felt funny and it was hard to eat while keeping food away from them.
Its 4 months approx since then, I healed up fine, and the gaps are closing nicely. I have to get two wisdom teeth extracted and am similarly terrified (you would think I'd be used to it by now!) but at least this time I know there is no point worrying about it beforehand, I just have to grin and bear it!

Thank you!

I've lost count of the times I've looked for reassurance about this, but each time I get some, it really does help :)

I'm not too worried about pain, but am more concerned with recovery/healing time, and how long before I can eat properly etc.

Also, for me, this is the point of no return on my braces journey. Once I do this, there really is no turning back! Scary prospect.

5 hours to go!

It was for me too- you can't change your mind about braces once the teeth are out! On the upside, you won't ever be able to say to yourself "I want them off now!" because you know you're worse off than before you had them with your "lovely" gaps!
Am actually kind of happy that its my wisdoms coming out this time, beacuse there will be now visable spaces or gaps to close. Four months down the line I still have visable spaces (if I smile wide enough or laugh they can be seen, although most people don't notice them) which don't seem to have shrunk very much but i don't really mind them - I know it'll be worth it soon.
I don't know about anyone else on the forum, but I personally feel that after all this I deserve beautiful straight teeth more than people who were born with them because of everything I've done to get there!

Well, how did it go? I had both of my upper premolars extracted yesterday and I feel fine today. Yesterday was a little uncomfortable, but I took the pain meds that my dentist prescribed for me and I was fine. I was able to eat soup and a baked potato for dinner last night and had a banana for breakfast this morning. As long as you take it easy and eat soft foods you should be fine. Good luck!

PS: I haven't need any pain meds today.

Well I'm back, and with two less teeth than before.

It was NOT quite as simple a procedure as most people were saying though.

I was very nervous to begin with when I arrived at the dentist, and it was made a little worse by them running behind schedule, so I had that little buit of extra time to listen to that aweful drill, or whatever it is, being used on other people.

Then its my turn.

I go in, and recieve the injections of anesthetic, and waited 5 mins. Next thing I know, my nice lady dentist was no longer there, but was suddenly replaced by a very large guy who I had seen going in and out of the other rooms earlier.

Anyway, he did all the usual dentist stuff, 'open', 'bite', poke poke, open. then he produced this mean-looking thing and grabbed one of my teeth with it. He started pulling, HARD. He was a big guy and hes arm was really trembling!

Next thing I hear a very loud SNAP, followed by a grunt of some word I didn't quite catch. I realised that the tooth had broken off, and so it was time to dig for the root! He was digging for what seemed like an hour, but was only 10 minutes.

'Ok', he says, then proceeds to pull the other side. And guess what? ... SNAP!

Well I'm home how, and have just removed the gauze, but its still bleeding slightly.. Hope it stops soon.

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. It usually goes much more smoothly. Well, at least the worst part is behind you :)

I had extra gauze pads and just kept changing them until the bleeding stopped, per my instructions from my dentist. It took about 5 hours before it stopped bleeding completely. (I had to wet the gauze before I put it in my mouth because the dry gauze made me gag) I was also told no drinking from a straw, using mouth wash, and no smoking for at least 48 hours. And to start rinsing with salt water after 12 hours as this would speed the healing.

Cotton might stick to the open socket...I would run to the drug store and get some gauze.
