I'm just starting the process....yeah me....I'm 32 and recently quit smoking....I'm saving $300 a month, so I'm using my "smoking money" to get my teeth straightened....I am a sheriff's deputy in Washington State, so I work with the public and it's important to me to have a nice smile....I had spacers (they feel more like planks) put in on thursday and I feel like I'm going crazy....they hurt and I can't bite down on anything.....I was needing to vent, so here I am...

Yeah bro they hurt like a %$#@. Its the worst part of braces.
well i tend to disagree with most, while the spacers where kind of a pain.. the actual braces bother me the most.. im not sure if this happened with anyone else..
Congrats chelank63! For going for the braces and for giving up smoking! Yeah, the spacers bite. But it sure feels good to get them out! How many did you have to get? I was lucky and only had to have two, to allow for a band around a crown.
Does the "chelan" in your name refer to the town of Chelan? If that's where you live - lucky you! It's so pretty there! (I am also a Washingtonian.)

January 3, 2008 - Braced on bottom
Wow, what a lot of replies....thanks for all the shared sympathy.....I had 12 spacers in all....6 on top and 6 on bottom.....I still have the six on bottom.....along with stiches from gum surgery.....top braces on Tuesday....I'M IN PAIN....but I'm surviving.....and to answer Catfish....I'm in Chelan County....I patroled the Lake Chelan area last year, it's very beautiful...and to Wearethebord, I'm not a BRO, I'm a SISTA.....but thanks.......
I know how you feel. Spacers by far were the worst! After having them in I was thinking, "WTF am I doing to myself?" but be reassured once those spacers come out all is well. Braces may be uncomfortable for a few days or weeks but to me they were never painful like spacers! You'll be fine.
and congrats on quitting smoking!!

21 months in braces, 17 months in elastic, NO regrets!! Now in Hawley retainers!!
I just got my spacers put in a few hours ago, 8 of them, and so far it just feels weird.
When do they start to hurt?
Also, one of them feels lower than the others, prevents my teeth from touching, the others don't don't. Does this mean that it's more likely to fall out or not do it's job?
I thought I'd be smart when I had my spacers a couple weeks ago. Since they told me not to worry if I lose any a few days prior to getting my braces, I "accidentally" lost the one that was particularly bothering me. Man, was it tough getting the anchor around that molar! They may be painful, but you sure need the space that they create!
I feel you mate lol just got my spacers in today owch !!! IT took about an hour or so for the pain but I can hardly chew and i need to do that to EAT !!lol
Sounds like u have the same b day as me!
Thank god I only have 4 though, 6 or 8 wow thats a load thats nearly all bands. Thanks anyway knid of needed somewhere to let out like you did. And well I'm kind of reassured I hope it gets better.
Audra wrote:Does anyone know why some people get spacers and others don't? I didn't so am curious why.
Some people need spacers to accommodate molar bands(make space to fit them around their molars). Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think it depends on what your ortho prefers to use and if your molars have been capped(or had other work done) and a bracket won't stay attached to it.
Keep smilin'!

Braced for 18 months: Damon 3mx all around with Damon 3's on "social six". Now is Essix retainers for 10 hours/night.

I don't have any crowns or fillings so that's probably why I didn't get molar bands. But what you have said about surgeons preferring that surgical patients be banded has me wondering if I will be eventually as I will need surgery to correct my underbite. I guess I will see. I haven't had a consult with the surgeon yet as I've only just gotten the braces.
