I would probably just have him in the traditional, metal braces.
The reason people choose invisalign is because of the non-visibility factor, but when you're 12, most of your friends either have braces or have had braces, so they're not that big a deal.
Also, invisalign depends on patient cooperation, since they're removable. If he had metal braces affixed to his teeth, there would be no time in which his teeth weren't moving and as mentioned, there'd be no way he could lose them.
But ultimately, you know him best, and maybe invisalign would be the best option for him. The best thing to do would be to talk to your orthodontist and hear his/her opinion. ^^

Ask him what he wants. His opinion should count or be taken into consideration.
Personally, I don't think most kids and teens are responsible enough for Invisilgn in most cases (not all, just most). Metal braces are also very socially acceptable, not to mention a lot cheaper.
Have you had your son evaluated yet? Permanent braces will require enough maintence as is and they take commitment. I would fear my child would not wear the retainers properly and it would be a waste of money. Insurance might also cover regular braces too, so check with them to see what is covered for your child.

I agree with Meryaten.
When I began my Invisalign treatment almost 2 years ago, I read on their website that they wouldn't even accept cases of kids younger than 17, for above reasons. Maybe that has changed by now, but I think it's true that we, as paying adults, tend to take care a lot more of the aligners, wearing time etc... Invisalign is great, but it requieres a lot of responsibility and effort/ care. Just think of how many kids lose/ break their retainers/ loose appliances, and the Invisalign aligners are much more fragile, are not THAT easy to clean, and should be worn 22 hours a day (which I never did, but that's a different story...).
In the case of your son, I would just go with metal/ ceramic brackets. All the kids wear them, and they seem to be working just great, and children adopt to them really easily.

If I were in your shoes I would either wait until he gets older for the Invisalign or, if you're set on bracing him now, go with metal. If you are willing to spend the money on braces you want to be sure you get results, you probably don't want him to have the option to take them off. Unless you have an exceptionally responsible 12 year old, he will only wear them when he remembers and inevitably he will lose them in the lunch room. I am 20 and didn't trust myself enough to get Invisalign--in part because I knew I'd find it all too convenient to take them out but in part because, even in Invisalign, my mom still had to get metal braces for 6 months. Of course only an orthodontist will know what will work best in terms of efficacy.
