pre-braces going on ????

#1 Post by shan*rock »

I'm just wondering if the ortho cleans your teeth before putting the braces on. I'm particularly interested because I currently have spacers and I feel like so much junk is getting stuck around them.

Can anyone fill me in on their experience? Thanks!

There was a lot of food stuck in mine, it was gross! I just asked my ortho if I could brush my teeth once they had taken my spacers out. I'm not too sure if they actually cleaned mine I don't believe they did. But you can always ask to brush/floss etc.

Generally, the ortho does not do dental cleanings. I have read that it is a good idea to go to the dentist for a bi-annual cleaning before you get your braces put on. I had spacers and tried to do this but got cancelled at the last minute, so I got braces right before I had my 6 month checkup/cleaning, and it was no big deal. As far as cleaning around your spacers goes--get a WaterPik and seriously blast the area. Believe me you will want to have one when you have braces anyway.

Good to know, thanks mkvkelly and janessa. If they don't ask me if I want to brush after the spacers come out I will make sure to ask if I can.

Janessa, I picked up a waterpik last week and have used it a few times, but I've been a little bit afraid to ever since these spacers got put in. I didn't want to make one pop out, but I guess that's not very likely to happen from a Waterpik right?

I didn't have time to get my teeth cleaned before my braces went on, but they said it wasn't going to be any problem at all --- as they were going to do a little bit of cleaning on the surface of the teeth before they put the brackets on.

You can always just schedule yourself a cleaning with the spacers in I suppose, jsut to be on the safe side.

They put this paste on my teeth before and had me rinse before they put the braces on. This is a standard practice at my otho. It was kind of grainy paste, so they have the patients floss before the braces go on.
