Has anyone had fixed braces on crowns?

#1 Post by KM123 »

I am about to have braces fitted on my teeth to sort out the front 6 upper teeth but they are all crowned. My dentist told me this is fine but it does worry me a little. I am also have the back teeth brought out as they go in (crossbite I think its called!) but these teeth are not crowned so should be ok.

Also I was going to go for the metal ones but now I am thinking perhaps I should go for the ceramics. My original thinking is that you can see them either way and at least if I get the metal ones it is obvious what they are as opposed to people thinking I've got something stuck on my teeth maybe with the ceramics?

Oh and by the way I am in my late 30s

I'm getting braces soon too (about 8 weeks) and they will have to fix them to 5 crowns in my mouth. I'm getting the ceramics one. Today I got a pendulum put in and part of it had to be glued to my crowns... all is well so far... Good luck!

Thanks for that. It is the teeth that are crowned that need moving with the fixed brace, is that the same with you?

Thanks

I have braces, crowns and a bridge

#7 Post by jrb2008 »

Hi,
I have been in self ligating ceramic braces(top) and metal SL on the bottom for a little over a year now. My ortho didn't put brackets on my crowns (I have 2) or my bridge until I was 8 months in. Before the brackets, he used springs to make space for the crowding around the bridge I believe. So far, so good! No broken crowns!

My front crowns had no effect on bracket choice and they have moved just the same as my natural teeth. Clear versus metal is all personal choice... people will know you're having treatment if you make it obvious, but most of the time, people won't even pay attention to what's on your teeth.
Upper and lower 1st premolars extracted
Uppers braced 4/6/07 & Lowers braced 4/20/07
ceramic brackets and rectangular arch wires

I also have brackets on a crown and a bridge - metal and ceramic. My ortho wasn't at all concerned about it and I haven't had any issues. He did avoid putting a bracket on an implant, but others have told me that although an implant won't move, it can be used as an anchor. So, along with the other posts here, it sounds as though you don't need to worry at all. I was glad of your question too, as I hadn't heard of anyone else with braces on crowns or bridges. Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the replies. I feel much better knowing there are other with crowns who have not had problems.

I go for my impressions on Thursday so shouldn't be long now until they are fitted.

I only need mine on for 9 months which seems so much shorter than anyone else I have read so now I'm wondering why? Do I sound like a worrier  :D

Thanks again

I have metal on the bottom and ceramic on top. My crown was not affected by wearing braces and moved with the other teeth. The only down side to ceramics is that the ligatures(moduals)/power chains turn yellow quickly. It is NOT a good look. I am happy with my choice though because my job requires a lot of talking.

Hi all, this is my first post (ever!)

I had Damon braces fitted about 7 weeks ago and one of my front upper teeth is crowned. My orthodontist said that it can be tricky to get the bracket to stick to crowns, so he pre-treated the crown with an acid etch. During my first adjustment (yesterday) he tried a heavier wire on my upper teeth, but the bracket on the crown kept popping off, so in the end he reverted to a lighter wire.

Has anyone else experienced problems with bonding brackets to ceramic crowns?

I have three crowns and my ortho doesn't seem at all concerned. I'll let you know how it goes. I getting mine the same day as you. I'm getting ceramic top and bottom.

Good luck. :D
