Uh oh...help!

#1 Post by janessa »

I am less than 2 weeks in and it's trouble already! Ok so yesterday the whole day the teeth on the bottom right of my mouth were sore, like I couldn't even really chew. Then last night as I was getting ready for bed I noticed a considerable (1/4" approx) amount of wire slack between the back bracket and the 2nd bracket in. I didn't think much of it, I guess I just thought that my teeth were moving. Well, just now I was brushing and I heard a pop and now the wire is straight again with no slack. Did it pop out and pop back in of the back bracket? Should I call my ortho? I don't know how well I can explain this over the phone. My teeth have been sore all day but I am noticing movement already. Thanks!

It probably popped out of the rearmost bracket, and then popped itself in again. This can happen early in treatment with the thin flexible wires. If everything feels OK there's no need to call your ortho, but next time you go, ask him to bend the ends of the wire inwards. That will stop it popping out and will also stop it stabbing your cheek if the wire end starts to poke out of the back (this can also happen early on as teeth start to straighten up).

The brackets on my bottom molars are pretty far apart so the wire has a fair amount of unsupported length back there. When I had a super flexible wire I would have the problem of the wire bowing out. I especially noticed it after eating. Usually I could take my finger and press on the wire and it would pop back in the back bracket.

One side did come out entirely though, so I had to go in to have it fixed. The assistant put the wire in a tube and then put the tube in the bracket (hope that makes sense) and it fixed the problem. For now just try to pop the wire back in yourself when you notice it slipping out, and if it comes out completely--don't worry--it's an easy fix.
