High lip line

#1 Post by Sweety »

I have a gummy smile and want to get rid of it. My ortho and OS are against doing upper jaw surgery just for cosmetic reason as minor jaw change is needed. And I am don't want it too. Crown lengthening or gum lift won't help much either.

I read about a procedure named Upper Lip repositioning surgery which is not a major surgery. This prevents upper lip from going upwards while smiling. Did anyone undergo this procedure or know about it? Please give some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I have a gummy smile too. I'd be interested in hearing about this. Sounds like something that could be good. I have a nice smile if I control it and dont smile tooo wide. My problem is when I'm unconciously smiling or laughing.

Exactly Meryaten....Do you think it's a safe procedure considering long term like relapse? I saw it in extreme makeover too. I am not sure whether people are more into this procedure. My ortho has not even heard about it. I wish we could know more about it. Anyone who has infact done this surgery?

I had this done with my BSSO. I was supposed to have upper and lower but the movement with the upper was so slight my surgeon decided the extra pain and surgery wasnt worth it. He did a X or Y stitch (sorry cant remember) this was all decided at last minute. I had lip incompetence before as well and the BSSO would NOT have corrected that completely.

If it is the procedure your talking about they cut the underside of the lip where its attatched to the gum and reposition it.

Yes it was sore, yes it made a difference, yes I love it.
The difference is so subtle that unless I told you I had it done you would not know the difference.

It keeps my upper lip from rolling up into a flat line now it keeps the full pout in the center when I smile. I still show some gum tissue when smiling really big but the lip doesnt roll and it looks 10x better. I didnt show a lot of gum tissue before but enough that it bothered me.

My lips now meet without strain as well.
Good luck

jmrut, Could I ask how much the surgery cost you? Where'd you go, a plastic surgeon? Do you happen to have any before and after pics?

jmrut....wow..that's so wonderful to find you having done this...could please tell what's the name of the surgery and I have same questions as jaswi asked before me. How much time it took to see the difference? I think it was done by OS in your case, right? Please reply with details. Thanks so much.

Jaswi- My OS did it along with my BSSO. I have no idea how much it cost. He decided to do it at the last minute and just did it while he was doing my jaw surgery. I am sure its not that expensive. It could probably be done in the office IMO.

I have posted some pics before and after at various times on the site. Do a search for my posts under my name or I will PM you my myspace. I have some on there.

My family noticed it the most. It really changed my lips alot but very subtle IMO. Like I said unless I told you I did it you would have thought that they changed due to the BSSO.

Sweety- It is lip lenthening procedure and they use something they call an X or Y stitch. I am sure your OS will know exactly what it is. The difference was immediate after the swelling from the BSSO went down. Well actually a little before that. My upper lip was really sore though. Well no more sore than my jaw but it was not numb afterwards like my lower lip. I have reallly noticed a difference the last few weeks almost all of my swelling is gone I am about 4 months post op.

After doing some searching, I found a couple websites that detail the procedure you're talking about. I'm really beginning to wonder how much this costs and just how painful it is, cause wow the results seem good.

Heres the link the the website, be warned there are a few graphic pictures of the actual surgery.

I'm very interested in how much this procedure would cost as well. I have a somewhat gummy smile and an uneven gum line. I was planning on having crown lengthening after my braces come off. My lateral incisors look short and stubby next to my large centrals and one canine is covered by a lot more gum than the other.

I also have lip incompetence and my lip rises significantly when I laugh or smile really big. :? I would love to a lip lowering procedure done!

I'm guessing insurance wouldn't cover any of these procedures since they are cosmetic...
