Spacers Today

#1 Post by Arbywhopper »

I get spacers today!!!!!!!! I don't think I’m excited, more nervous!!! But nonetheless it’s happening today!!! I will be braced on October 7th. I will only get braces on my uppers until they fix my overbite. My "sentence" is 30 months!!!!!! That’s a really really long time!!!! He also said I might have to get 1 tooth pulled, to make up for the one that didn't develop. I'm really scared, but it’s going to happen!!! Yay!! Finally!!! How bad are the spacers?? Does that pain go away after a couple days??

Congrats on getting started... yea spacers are more aggrevating than anything.. ( feels like ya got huge chunks of streak forever caught in your teeth ) they wern't bad at all for me.. but things may differ for you ... as for the pain give it a week and it should die down a bit..

I also get spacers in today - in about 4 hours. yikes! I'm more worried about them getting them in (and then out) than I am the annoyance of it all. I started this process back in June, and am going through a dental school, so in most ways I am just really glad to finally be taking the first real step. My "sentence" is also 30+ months. I get bands on next Thursday and brackets on my back teeth only and a TPA (by far, the main thing I'm dreading) on Oct. 16th. Then I get 4 teeth pulled on Nov. 4. :( Let me know how it goes for you and I'll do the same!

Good luck Arbywhopper!

Well, one bright spot is that you only have to have them in for a short time :) Hopefully they will not cause you much discomfort. And, less then a week till brace day, yay! I'm glad you have decided to go forward with treatment. This is something you will not regret doing for yourself.

One of my daughters had to have spacers for a while before her expander was placed. She didn't have any trouble with them at all, so maybe you will luck out too

There was a bit of difficulty because my teeth are so crammed together. I ended up with metal spacers (looks like a staple?) and I'm not sure how they're supposed to make space between my teeth, but whatever. I think I have one regular elastic but the rest are metal. She tried using elastics for all of them but it wouldn't work...I'm just hoping there is an elastic one in there because otherwise I'm missing one! And it's my back molar on the top so I really can't see. argh

I'm glad I ended up with the metal ones (I think). All I know is that when she was trying to put the elastic ones in, it felt like she was going to pull my teeth out! I guess I'm more worried about a tooth breaking or a filling popping off. And I couldn't see myself messing with those elastic ones to put them back in.

Pain level... next to nil at the moment (about 5 hours in). It is a little irritating on my cheeks to have the metal ones because of the loop that sticks out. It's also hard to chew with them. I just tried having some soup and I managed to eat it - but not really to enjoy it. oh well.

Did anyone else get/have metal spacers?

I'm about 14 hours into it and i'm in pain!!! i couldn't sleep!!! going in wasn't as bad as i thought. but the pressure that i have now hurts so bad, and its really uncomfortable. i hope today it gets a little bit better!! i have all elastic ones. 1 of them had to be flossed in, which wasn't too bad.

yeah

Mine hurt a lot more now too. I kind of expected they would... It's more a really bad ache than anything else. I don't grind my teeth, but I must bite down when I'm asleep because I think I bit down and pushed them all a little deeper - which probably is supposed to happen. But now they hurt - so you're not the only one. :-/ I'm just a little worried with the metal ones, a few seem a little loose - I don't want to eat something and have one accidently fall out? She said I could eat "normally" though? (not that I feel like it, atm!) I'm going to take some advil.

advil does nothing

#10 Post by jjjmac »

okay, mine hurt pretty bad right now, almost 24 hours later... I keep telling myself the pain is a good thing, because it means I'm finally doing something and getting started with this all. The Advil has been no help, however. And I'm still worried I'm missing a spacer in the back, unless that was the one spot she managed slipped an elastic one into. If there is one back there, I can't feel it at all. Do the metal spacers hurt more than the elastic ones?

Tuesday? You're lucky - mine are in until Thursday! :( And yeah, better get used to the pain now... some people say spacers can be the worst part of the whole process though - somehow, I don't believe that ...

about the same

#15 Post by jjjmac »

I feel about the same. I suffered through a soup meal last night and had oatmeal and pudding so far today - more soup for lunch. So it's going okay. If I'm not eating anything, the pain isn't bad.

I am just really glad I don't have to worry about mine falling out like yours are! I'm surprised your ortho didn't give you extras to put in yourself at home? Mine was going to if she could have given me the elastic spacers... I really don't think I could have gotten them in correctly, so I guess it's just as well that I'm stuck with the metal spacers.
