Messed up speech during braces...

I got my braces on back in Feb 08 to fix my crowded teeth and overbite and have basically been having problems saying "s" sounds since I got them. Obviously having the speech problem is not ideal. I have a lot of new gaps in my teeth right now which I guess along with a little bit of an open bite, my ortho says is causing the speech impediment. I am wondering how common it is to have this problem and at what point during treatment did your speech improve?

When i first got my braces on I had quite a bit of a lisp and people said I kinda sounded weird and that I wouldn't pronouce things very clearly. Eventually over time the lisp got better or i didn't really notice it anymore as much. Sometimes today I can still sort of notice it specifically when i've been talking for quite a bit of time. I to have a bit of a problem when I' say "s" words" but its definetly not as bad as it was when i got my braces on in march. Having large gaps in your mouth would prob be the reason your running into speech problems. Hope it gets better for ya!

I have a little lisp now. I have been braced for a week. I notice that when I get tired my speech gets worse. I just try to take it slow and enunciate as clearly as possible. Hopefully it will get better over time.

I had just the tiniest bit of a lisp before I got braced. Now I have a very noticeable lisp. My "S's" actually whistle a bit. But I just got braced yesterday and I'm hoping that will diminish with practice.

Yep, I had speech issues early on too! I also had problems talking when I got an appliance/lower expander thing added to the treatement and when I got a new elastic configuration a while back. It takes a few weeks to get used to but you'll be talking without any problems before you know it!

I had a bit of a lisp that went away after a few weeks, but every now and again, when the air catches the hollows between my teeth just right, I'll make this loud "grizzled old prospector" whistle. It seems to occur most often with "f" sounds and it gets my dog's attention every time.
