Perm. retainer WITH braces?

#1 Post by roxxie »

So at my adjustment the other day (14 months) they said that my bottom teeth are at almost the right spot (hooray!). So, at the next appointment they are going to put the permanent/bonded retainer on the bottom to "set" them. They aren't going to remove the bottom braces, but only because they need them to attach the elastics to.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Why should I need a retainer AND braces? How will this set my teeth? I still have about 10 months left in my treatment.

:?

(I apologize if this question has been asked, but as you can imagine I got quite a few results using the keywords "braces" and "retainer"...)

Hopefully someone who knows more than me will chime in. I have no experience, just a guess based on what I've read online.

My guess is that the braces stay, as you said, to have a place for the elastics to attach. But they don't want your teeth to keep moving, so the retainer is to hold them in place where they are now.
