Self Ligating braces from GAC
Good evening everyone. Well I am 29 years old and found out a few weeks ago that I am going to the new owner of braces. Yeah, I can't tell you how unexcited I am about this. But my big question is, has anyone here had self ligating braces? My ortho is going to be using the GAC Innovation self ligating brackets. Has anyone heard about actually been put in these particular brackets? Just curious. Not much info out there about this type of braces. And plus I have never had to have anything done to my teeth but hte occasional filling so any hints tips or answers would be helpful.
Hi,
I've been in the self ligating GAC innovation brackets for 19 long months now. I went with the "translucent" ceramic brackets. The ceramic brackets have a bigger profile than the metal. I have metal on the bottom. I have no problems to report with the self ligating brackets. I can actually feel them take action on their very own weeks after adjustments. I don't believe they work much faster than a traditional bracket but I sure am glad not to deal with the little ligatures. Although, I'm 28 years old and maybe that's why movement wasn't as speedy as I had anticipated, not to mention my bridge and few crowns. Overall, I think they're great, adjustments are a piece of cake and take about 5 minutes.
Good luck!

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. It is so hard to find any real good info online about the brackets. And I feel like a big baby if I keep calling my orhtodontists office to ask questions. I will be getting both uppers and lowers in the metal brackets. A little nervous. How long did it take for you to get them put on? I am getting both uppers and lowers on the 5th.

Hi Beamer! I have the braces you are talking about. I started out with different braces but then I moved across the country in the middle of treatment. The ortho I chose in my new town uses the Innovation brackets and I chose to have the ceramic type. My front 8 teeth on top and my front 6 teeth on bottom have the ceramic, but they used the metal innovation brackets for the rest of my teeth. My appointment was longer than most people because I had to get my old braces taken off and my new ones put on all at the same time, but I think it took about 1.5 hours to get the new ones put on. It's a long time to keep your mouth open but when I saw what they looked like I was very glad to have these instead of my old braces. My old ones were ceramic but not self ligating, so I had the elastics that would stain all the time. With these, there are no elastics so they look much cleaner, to me at least.
If you are looking for some more info on the braces, my orthodontist's website has a section about them and it has a video you can watch where people who either had or have these braces talk about them.

Hey, Thanks. I am going to visit your link that you posted. It is so hard to find info. Thanks again. I am now on the Count Down to braces. I go in next Thurs. They told me I would be there for about 2 hours. But they are also going to do the records at that time. Hopefully I won't too miserable afterwards. At least I am prepared. I have made plans to go with a friend and get smoothies after I am done.
I've got metal Innovations on my lowers and have been very happy with them. They are much smaller than my upper ceramics and my lower lip doesn't stick out as much with them as with the larger ceramics on top. Adjustments have been easy and none have debonded--I've had six ceramic brackets come off in the last 26 months. I've only had one issue with one of the brackets that was on a tooth that was really out of place. When I got them put on the wire was really twisted and apparently the door wasn't completely closed because the wire was coming through the middle of the bracket where the door should have been closed. As the tooth straightened out I still had problems with keeping that door closed and eventually my ortho put a ligature over it but it wasn't a big deal.
If I had it to do all over again I would have gone with metal brackets on top as well. My ortho originally recommended that I go with all metal but I pressed him about upper ceramics. They cost another $350 and he said they could add 2-3 months to my treatment time. Once my teeth started to straighten out I began smiling more and didn't care about showing my braces--I was just glad that my teeth were finally becoming straight for once in my life. Now I've got less than a month to go before they are removed and it has all been worth it. Good luck next week!

That is great. Congrats on the upcoming debracing. All of the info that I have received since signing up at ARCH WIRE has been more helpful than any of the info that I found on the web site for the manufacturer. If anyone has any words of wisdom for me let me know. All of the advice or even stories I can get would be helpful and appreciated. Although I know that there is life while in braces I am still nervous. I had a dream or more like a nightmare last week, that I went in to get the braces on and instead of putting on my braces they wired my mouth shut. How's that for nervous. Everyone who has heard about it thinks it's funny. But my husband since he had braces when he was a kid thinks that I am being weird. He says it is no big deal I don't know what you're so worked up over. Oh well, maybe I will just bite him after I get the braces on. Teach him to be a turd.
Hey Beamer,
I've had my Innovation self litigating brackets for about 4 months now and I really like them. I have ceramics on the top and bottom and haven't had any problems with them. Once they told me that I pretty much didn't have to worry about staining I was sold because I drink red wine and eat curry foods all the time. I couldn't tell you if the the treatment is going to be longer or shorter because how my teeth are it was going to be a lengthy process no matter what. But my last adjustment probably took like 10-15 minutes at the most, and that was because they had to add a couple more brackets on.
